Regular car tune ups are important to preserve the car’s good running performance. Failure to do this might cost you hundreds of dollars for engine repairs. Regular car tune up also allows you to know the needed replacements on the vehicle’s engine. Try to practice regular car engine tune ups using the useful tips enumerated below.
Start with the distributor cap
Start the tune up service of your car by removing its distributor cap. Familiarize yourself with is position before removing it. This allows you to replace it correctly after the work is done. Check the cap for possible wears.
Once the distributor cap is removed, you are now able to take the rotor out and replace it. The rotor needs to be replaced every 100,000 miles for newer cars. When you replace a rotor with a new one, the distributor cap also needs to be replaced. This is because the rotor and the distribution cap react to produce a spark that the vehicle needs.
You also need to replace the spark plugs and its wires when doing the car’s tune up. This gives the vehicle’s engine a better starting capability. Make sure to check the car’s air filter and replace it with a new one when apparent wears are visible and get a auto repair financing .
Use high quality oils and lubricants
Use high quality oils and lubricants for better engine performance. Instead of using cheaper oils and lubricants, spend an additional amount to buy those that are made by reputable oil companies. Doing these boosts your car engine’s performance.
It is also advisable to change the car’s oil and top it up when doing the tune up. Maintain the engine’s good performance by doing regular change oils every 3000 miles. Change the car’s Oil filter change every second oil change. You can also use coolant additives to bring down the temperature of the car’s engine.

(ARA)- Drivers, why not make every day Earth Day?
According to officials with the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), motorists can help the environment and their own finances by changing a few habits. This may come as surprise to those who think they must wait for hybrid or alternate-fueled vehicles to become popular.
ASE recommends regular vehicle maintenance and better driving habits as two can’t-fail action plans. Here are a few specific, easy-to-implement tips from ASE.
– Keep the engine running at peak performance — a misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent. Replace filters and fluids as recommended in your owner’s manual. A well tuned engine pollutes less and uses less gasoline than a neglected vehicle. Moreover, engine performance problems only get worse if neglected.
– If you do your own repairs, be a good citizen. Dispose of engine fluids and batteries properly. A single quart of used motor oil can pollute thousands of gallons of water. Anti-freeze poured on the ground can poison wildlife and household pets. Some repair facilities accept used fluids and parts. Or call your local government for more information.
– Keep tires properly inflated and aligned. If your air pressure is just a few pounds low, you force the engine to work harder (read: burn more gasoline) just to move the vehicle. Tires that are misaligned also make your vehicle work harder. Consider, too, that poorly maintained tires wear out faster, which means more discards have to be scraped, recycled or sent to the landfill.
– If you are not much of a do-it-yourselfer, find a good technician. Ask friends for recommendations. Check the reputation of the repair shop with your local consumer group. Check out the technicians’ credentials. ASE-certified auto technicians have passed one or more national exams in specialties such as engine performance and air conditioning.
– Have your vehicle’s air conditioner serviced only by a technician certified to handle and recycle refrigerants. Older air conditioners contain ozone-depleting chemicals, which could be released into the atmosphere through improper service.
– Avoid speeding and sudden accelerations. Both habits guzzle gas and put extra wear and tear on your vehicle’s engine, transmission, steering and suspension system, and other components. Use cruise control and anticipate traffic patterns ahead. As a side benefit, your brakes will last longer.
– When waiting for friends or family, shut off the engine. Consolidate daily errands to eliminate unnecessary driving. And, yes, walk more often.
– Remove excess items from the vehicle’s truck, since less weight means better mileage. Remove that roof-top luggage carrier after vacations to reduce air drag.
If appeals to save the environment are not enough, consider this: A poll of ASE-certified auto technicians indicated that a well-maintained vehicle should last 50 percent longer than a neglected one. Good car care saves you money and helps the environment — a win-win situation.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive professionals. ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of certification. Their employers often display the ASE sign.

11 Tips To Keep Your Car Running Smooth

Auto care is vital for a vehicle to operate smoothly and always remain in a good condition. Automobile owners as such, need to pay attention toward the maintenance of their vehicles. Lack of attention on their part hampers the performance and quality of the engine causing grave maintenance problems. Non-availability of spare parts further adds to this problem.
Recent studies note, five percent of fatalities related to motor vehicles are due to negligence of automobile maintenance. Auto care extends the life of an automobile, ensures a safer movement and contributes to a healthy environment.
Auto care means keeping the engine in tune so the owner saves on money as well as time. Tuning up the engine at fixed intervals helps in keeping it run smoothly, addresses other electrical and mechanical problems in the engine and is economical. If an engine is encountering problems, it is advisable that owners take it to a technician, who will locate the exact cause and suggest an appropriate solution. Skip the idea of having it checked by a service provider for the tune up.
Auto Care Tips:
Automobile owners need to care for their vehicle right from the date of its purchase and have a little bit knowledge of its engine. Often, service providers take vehicle owners for a ride cheating on them and the owners have to shell out a huge amount on fixing a minor engine problem.
Tuning up the engine, as part of auto care, includes replacing the ignition wires, spark plugs, PCV (positive crankcase ventilation valve), air filters and fuel. In addition, auto care calls for testing ignition system, servicing injectors and fuel system and resetting engine timing.
Consider following tips so the engine stays tuned up and the vehicle performs well:
1. For auto care by self, it is ideal for automobile owners to refer the user manual for fixing certain minor problems within the engine. As a thumb rule, change the oil filter on a regular basis, each 3,000-4,000 miles.
2. Checking the tire inflation is a part of auto care. Tires, which are under-inflated, result in loss of fuel efficiency. This is one cheap form of safety and preventive maintenance. Check the tires every month.
3. Check all the fluids that include power steering, brake, antifreeze and windshield washer solvent and transaxle/transmission, since these fluids ensure safety and good performance of a vehicle and are an important measure of auto care.
4. Since a restricted fuel injector/polluted spark plug reduces the efficiency of fuel by 30%, an automobile owner has to be cautious while tuning up the engine.
5. Clean the battery posts and cables when needed and check the same for corrosion. Besides, check battery fluids and fill them if low except for batteries that are maintenance-free.
6. For auto care, inspect engine belts always since worn belts are likely to affect performance of the engine. See if these belts have developed any cracks and try fixing the problem.
7. Lubricate the chassis often, since it extends life of engine components.
8. Check the lighting system including turn signals, taillights, brake and headlights.
9. Automobile owners need to check washer blades of the windshield for tears and cracks and replace them once in every year.
10. As a step toward auto care, always check for air filtration system in the engine. Owners need to do this at every oil change for confirming if there is any damage or clogging. It ensures better functioning of the vehicle.
11. Always keep the user manual handy. No matter whether the engine is minor or major, the moment it gives any problem, owners may refer the same for fixing temporary problems before taking the vehicle to a qualified technician.

Tips for Getting Your Boat Ready for Storage
Posted: Jan 23, 2009 |Comments: 0

When winter comes and you are no longer able to enjoy your boat it is important that you spend some time getting your boat ready for storage. Storing your boat for the winter or long periods without use is much different than storing your boat in between outings. During long periods between boat use following a boat storage routine is the best way to ensure the continued usefulness and reliability of your boat. If you are new to long term boat storage our tips will help make getting your boat ready for storage quick and easy.
One of the first things that you should do when preparing your boat for storage is stop condensation from forming in the fuel lines and tank of your boat. To do this you must fill your boats gas tank up completely and then add a good fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank. The instructions for adding fuel stabilizer vary from manufacture to manufacture. For this reason it is extremely important that you follow the instructions provided on the fuel stabilizer container with no deviations. Do not make the mistake of assuming that all fuel stabilizers are the same because that is simply not the case. Once you have filled your boats fuel tank up completely and added the stabilizer start the boats motor on flusher and let it run for about one minute so that the new fuel with the stabilizer can work its way through your boats system.
Next you must apply fogging oil to the boats carburetors. Many boats have a fitting for applying fogging oil and you will need to read your boats manufactures guide to find out where it is. In the event that your boat does not have a fogging oil fitting then you will need to find a good place to apply the oil on your own or with the help of someone who is comfortable with boats. Some find it easiest to just remove the carburetor cover for application. Once the fogging oil is applied to your dormant boat expect the motor of the boat to smoke a great deal when it is next used. This is perfectly normal and not a sign of anything wrong. In fact, expect for the boat motor to smoke excessively for the first few uses after the fogging oil is applied.
Fogging oil must also be applied to the cylinders before the boat is put into storage. This can be done by removing the spark plugs and spraying the fogging oil directly into the cylinders. Replace the spark plugs that you have removed with brand new spark plugs. Also take some time to clean the housing of your boat and use anti corrosion spray on all electrical connections.
When you are done spraying the electrical connections of your boat with anti corrosion spray check the steering cables in and on the steering columns of your boat. Clean off any dirt or residue that has built up and air the shaft out completely. When you are finished spray all of the cables with anti corrosion spray. Taking the time to do this will help you avoid corrosion issues when the time comes to start using your boat again.
After the fogging oil has been applied it is time drain and completely flush out the boats gear case. This can be done by unhooking the flusher and then draining the gear case. Check the flushed lubricant for water and if water is in the lubricant replace your shaft seal immediately. Do not wait until you return from your trip or spring has come to replace this seal since neglecting this seal can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. After the lubricant has been completely drained and the shaft seal has been replaced (if necessary) refill the gear case with fresh lubricant.
One of the last things you should do when getting your boat ready for storage is disconnecting your boats battery. Remove the battery from the boat and carefully clean all of its terminals. Then spray the terminals with some of your anti corrosion spray and store the battery in a safe, warm, place that no one sleeps in. While your boat is in storage it is important that you charge your battery for several days each month to keep the battery in working condition.
When the time comes to officially store the boat place the motor in the downward running position and cover it. Use a motor cover that is not made of plastic since this will lead to a build up of moisture. Always use canvas coverings that let the motor breath while it is in storage. Lastly, grease all of the bearings of your boat if it is kept on a trailer and spray all unprotected metal parts of your boat with the anti corrosion spray.
Once you have followed all of the boat storage tips outlined above you will be able to rest knowing that your boat will be in good condition when the time comes to resume regular use.

Some boat owners prefer the rack storage or dry stack form of boat storage. When rack stored, a boat is kept in some form of cradle, if you will that is usually located in a covered or protected area. The major drawback to this type of boat storage is the fact that in order to use the boat, the owner will need to contact the boat storage provider first. The boat storage provider will then have the boat brought to the ground by utilizing some sort of crane or other lifting technique.

People who own RVs and do not have their own parking space usually need to spend a lot of money on just the parking alone. Instead, they think it is better to give it a proper storage area where the RVs will not just get a shelter, but they will also be well cared for. One more reason why people look for RV storage is if they are traveling to a busy city and do not find a suitable place to keep their RV there when they are roaming around the city.

7 Car Owner Guides For Preserving The Enviroment – Proper Car Drivings Tips

Planet earth is deteriorating at an accelerating speed, but you as a car owner can help with just a few simple steps! Do you know whether the way you are driving now is best for fuel efficiency, or if it emits more CO2 emissions than necessary? Read on to learn more.
1 – First and foremost, keep you engine running at peak performance by performing regular checkups. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent. Also, replace filters and fluids as per your owner’s manual. A well tuned engine will not only pollute less and use less fuel, but increase engine performance as well.
2 – If you are following the DIY route to car repairs, remember to dispose of engine fluids and batteries properly. A single quart of used motor oil can pollute thousands of gallons of water, while other chemicals can poison wildlife and household pets.

3 – While waiting for friends or family, shut off the engine. Consolidate your daily errands to eliminate unnecessary driving. Or better yet, walk!
4 – Keep tires inflated and aligned. Just a few pounds lower than the proper air pressure will force your engine to work harder and burn more fuel to move your car. Poorly maintained tires will also wear out faster, meaning more discards, and more rubbish in landfills!
5 – Make sure your car’s air conditioner is serviced by a technician certified to handle and recycle refrigerants. Older air conditioners contain ozone-depleting chemicals, further released into the atmosphere through improper service.
6 – If you are not good with DIY, make sure to hire a good technician. Ask for your friends’ recommendations and check out the technicians’ credentials beforehand.
7 – Avoid speeding and sudden accelerations. Both of these habits are gas guzzlers and put extra wear and tear onto your car’s engine, transmission, steering, suspension system and other components. Try to maintain your speed and anticipate traffic patterns ahead. Your brakes can also last longer.

As we all know, the engine falls as important to a car as the heart to a human body. Thus, its being fine tuned is not only important for trouble free performance but also the longevity of a car. Still, the car engine maintenance is one of the most neglected aspects of the overall maintenance of a car. Here are some essential car engine maintenance tips by following which you can not only keep the performance of the engine up to the mark but can also keep your pocket safe from heavy engine repair bills.
1)Regular Oil Change: – It is the most important and a must follow engine maintenance tip. One should strictly follow the oil change schedule provided by the company in order to keep the lubrication level up to the mark in the engine components. The engine oil catches metal particles and dirt with the time and if not changed at right time, it can affect the engine life very badly.
2)Avoid rough driving: – One should avoid driving vehicle roughly and should adopt engine friendly driving habits like using proper speed-gear combination and avoid overheating of the engine.
3)Maintaining Fluid Level: – The cooling system maintains the engine temperature and keeps it safe from overheating. Thus, maintaining the fluid level in the cooling system is very important and should be checked / refilled on a regular basis.
4)Listen to your car: – Keep a close eye on the performance of every component and scrutinize it carefully as soon as you hear any unusual sound coming out from any component. Even a faulty spark plug or a raddled air filter can prove harmful for over all engine unit, thus these components should be repaired / replaced as soon as you find a problem in any one of them.
5)Regular Service:- One should strictly follow the service schedule recommended by the company. The service includes checking / repairing / cleaning / replacing of many essential components of the engine system. Thus, it falls highly essential for the life and performance of the engine, in a longer run.

Winter Preparation Tips For Your Car

Winter brings with it an array of holidays, family picnics, and snow balls! On the other hand winter also brings long mornings filled with excruciating car troubles. Preparing beforehand on the maintenance of your car can help greatly with the endless troubles a car can give in winter.
A well maintained car has less chances of ditching you while driving then an ill maintained one. You should have a regular maintenance checklist of your car throughout the year. Some specific maintenance is advisable on a seasonal basis. And generally annual preparation tips include cleaning battery posts, inspection of spark plugs and breaks, and checking the engine oil.
Here are some winter maintenance tips you should keep in mind for preparing your car for winter:
Check your Antifreeze: antifreeze plays a vital role of your car’s protection against cold weather. A car generally has a solvent made with 50% water and 50% antifreeze in it. The level of the mixture should be checked regularly and should ideally be at full level. If you do not have the knowledge or are not open to the idea of popping that hood of your car, many service centers and mechanics will check the level for you free of any charge. A radiator flush should have already been done in the last season for optimal performance of your car.
Inspect your tires: Good and healthy tires have many benefits. From assisting in good and efficient breaking to boosting the mileage, a good set of tires proves to be a knight in shining armor in winter. The depth of the tires should be checked for optimum depth. The recommended tire depth is 2/32′ but if your tire depth is less then 4/32″ then you should consider buying a new tire. Along with a tire in a good condition, the tire pressure should also be checked and maintained at the recommended pressure for the tire, the tire losses pressure in winter because of contraction of air molecules.
Replace your wipers: In winter wipers do the job of cleaning and wiping anything that falls on your windshield, from snowfall to splashed slush from molten snow, the wipers of a car take care of everything. For proper cleaning a wiper should be in a healthy condition. The rubber blades of the wiper should be checked for cracks and unevenness resulting from change in weather conditions, or long term use.
Check your windshield washer fluid: Windshields are used regularly in winter for cleaning the windshield. A lot of dirt and dust settled on the windscreen turns to stains when it mixes with dewdrops or water from snow. The use of washer fluid is used extensively for this reason only. The level of washer fluid should be checked regularly to avoid running out of the washer fluid. Care should be taken not to use anything other then washer fluid in the washer fluid reservoir because a washer fluid is specially designed for winter and wont freeze.
Apart from the above mentioned tips, many other precautions could be undertaken to suit the individual needs.

Make Your Car a Lean Green Driving Machine with These Tips

Studies have shown that the internal combustion engine is responsible for a great deal of global warming, but there are some simple steps drivers can take to reduce their carbon footprints and lessen their cars’ impact on the environment. By following these simple steps you can enjoy the car you drive, reduce your environmental impact and maybe even save some money.
- Watch your speed – the faster you drive the more fuel your car’s engine burns, and the more carbon dioxide comes out of the tailpipe. Simply slowing down and obeying posted speeds can save you a great deal of money will reducing your car’s harmful emissions.
- Lighten the load – try to avoid carrying unneeded items in your car. Every little bit of extra weight reduces your car’s fuel efficiency. Be sure to bring your groceries in from the car right away, and store anything you do not need outside the car.
- Combine your errands – plan out your trip before you leave and you can shorten the distance you drive. By planning your errands carefully you can reduce your fuel consumption and your environmental impact.
- Avoid excessive idling – long idles waste a lot of fuel, so if you will be waiting for more than a couple minutes be sure to turn off your engine.
- Accelerate and brake smoothly – jack rabbit starts and panic stops are hard on your car and your fuel economy. Operating your vehicle smoothly and at a steady pace will reduce your fuel consumption, lessen your environmental impact and help your brakes last longer.
- Use air conditioning sparingly – air conditioning feels great on a hot and humid day, but it really takes a toll on your car’s carbon footprint. Save your air conditioner for the hottest days and roll down the windows the rest of the time.
- Maintain your car properly – a properly maintained car will be more fuel efficient – and more carbon friendly. Things like worn out air filters and fouled spark plugs cause your car to run less efficiently – and that means more emissions going into the air we breathe.

The transportation accounts for almost 67% of oil use in US that is mainly in the form of gasoline. There are ample ways available for improving gas mileage.
Tips for driving
- Idling would give one 0 miles per gallon. The only best way of warming up a vehicle is driving it. There is not more than 30 seconds that are needed for idling in winter days. There is hardly anything simpler that wastes fuel and increases emissions.
- The habit of speeding, aggressive driving, rapid acceleration and hard braking is a cause of wasting gas. It is also a cause of lowering one’s highway gas mileage to 33% and city mileage to 5%.
- High speeds should always be avoided. A gas mileage above 60 mph drops rapidly.
- The car should be cleared out. Extra weight in the car is a cause of decreasing gas mileage by 1% – 2% for every 100 pounds.
- The drag can be reduced by placing items inside the car or trunk rather than putting any on the roof racks. A carrier or a roof rack provides additional cargo space and may allow one to buy a smaller car. Although a roof rack that is loaded can decrease the fuel economy by 5% or even more.
- The carpooling, telecommuting and public transit can be checked for cutting car mileage and maintenance costs of the vehicle.
Car maintenance tips
The grade of motor oil can be used which is recommended by the car’s manufacturer. In case, if a different motor oil is used, the gasoline mileage can be lowered by 1% to 2%.
The tires should be kept properly inflated and aligned. This will improve the gasoline mileage of the car by around 3.3%.
Regular engine tune-ups should be done and car maintenance checks must be carried out for avoiding problems related to fuel economy that can be a cause of worn out spark plugs, transmission problems, dragging brakes or low transmission fluid.
The blocked air filters should be replaced for improving gas mileage by as much as 10%. This will protect the engine.
The everyday jobs should be combined into one trip. A lot of short trips or each one taken from a very start can consume fuel twice as much as one trip covering the same distance at the time when the engine is warm.
Tip for long-term savings
One should consider buying a vehicle which is highly fuel-efficient. A person can save a lot of gas at the gas station by using a fuel-efficient vehicle, an alternative fuel vehicle or a hybrid vehicle. They are also environment friendly and will help in protecting it. The fuel economy guide can be consulted for more tips for buying a new fuel-efficient car or a truck.

Several Signs for Car Maintenance
Car maintenance is a crucial issue. However, most of the car owners know that their cars need maintenance only when their cars go wrong, such as they shake, they will not start, and they make noises. It makes the owners waste money for extra fuel before the symptom is obvious. Meanwhile, some others only follow the scheduled maintenance which is recommended. It makes them waste money for replacing the parts which are still able to work for driving for some thousand miles.
