Computer Won’t Start? Check the Power Button Works Properly

It’s something we all dread, but has probably happened to many of us at one time or another. We go to turn a computer on, and instead of sparking into life, nothing happens — the computer appears completely dead. Though the cause of the problem is often a faulty power supply, sometimes the power button itself may not be working properly. Before investing in a new power supply, you can quite easily check to see if this is the case.

First, you need to open the computer’s case, this is normally accomplished by removing the left-hand panel of the computer (when viewed from the front), this generally simply involves removing two screws from the back of the case. After you remove the panel, lay the computer down on its side on a flat surface. You need to look carefully for a series of thin wires which come from the front of the case towards the computer’s motherboard. The wires are normally in different coloured pairs and each pair leads to 2 small pins on the motherboard; on the motherboard (and in the motherboard manual) you will find text which indicates what each pair of wires does. You will have a pair for the internal speaker, a pair for the reset button, a pair for the power switch, and a pair for the power light.

The wires we are interested in are the ones marked as the power switch often shown as PWR-BTN or something similar. Unplug these wires from the motherboard by pulling gently on the connector. Next, you will need a small flat-bladed screwdriver which can be used to bridge the gap between the pins on the motherboard where the wires were connected. The computer needs to be plugged in and if there is a switch on the power supply at the back of the case, this needs to be on as well. If the computer starts when you make a connection between the two pins with a screwdriver, then you know your problem is a faulty power button or a bad connection between the power button and the motherboard. Be careful not to touch anything with the screwdriver apart from these pins.

If the computer still doesn’t turn on, then it’s most likely the power supply which is causing the problem.

2. If you want to enhance your engine, you should consider the areas of the vehicle that have to have air flow. The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), a haven of phenomenal concepts and production vehicles, sparkled brightly like no other automotive event. The show is known for its ability to satisfy the cravings of car aficionados in every respect. Lately, it has offered a remarkable feast of automotive technology. And among the vehicles introduced, the electrifying appeal of the Chevrolet Volt seemed to steal the show.

Bob Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, showed off the Chevrolet Volt concept car – the so-called series hybrid. The batteries in the car do all the work in giving power and the gasoline engine is merely used to recharge them. The day was cloudy however and despite the weather, some 7,000 journalists came to witness the latest revelations in the auto industry.

The bountiful feast of automobiles includes Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen’s remarkable lineup. Mercedes-Benz also flaunted its Bluetec system that reduces harmful diesel engine emissions. By next year, the automakers will be offering “50-state” diesels that meet the stringent limits of states including California.

But according to critics and enthusiasts, the best meal was the Chevrolet Volt. GM announced its plan to build cars that accept a new kind of hybrid electric drive. These cars are expected to be released in 2010. To offer a sneak peek of what is to come, GM pulled the cover of Volt concept car, the first serial hybrid concept from the automaker.

Volt’s engine has no connection to the wheels. Instead, it turns a generator that charges batteries, the batteries power a motor, and the motor drives the car. According to the automaker, the car is engineered to go about 64 kilometers on a single charge and it is enough to cover many drivers’ daily requirements without ever engaging the tiny 1.0-liter engine to be in use. This engine’s only purpose is to serve as what GM calls a “range extender.” Usually, the car would recharge on wall current hence the term “plug-in hybrid.”

The 64-km range of the cars made it distinct from other hybrids. The latter runs mainly on gasoline or with a considerable help from electricity. Moreover, they are only capable of running on pure electric power in a matter of minutes. This is because they rely on nickel-metal hydride batteries. They are designed for high peak power rather than for utmost energy storage. The Chevrolet Volt, on the other hand, is engineered for lithium-ion batteries which are those batteries used in laptops.

To make the car commercially available, GM needs automotive-strength lithium-ion batteries. Various companies are working on the design and are testing them. But cars, compared to laptops and mobile phones, are more demanding. Laptops and mobile phones do not have to survive 64-km side impacts or work in temperatures from 30 °C to 249 °C (–22 °F to 480 °F) or during heavy dust storms. Worst, batteries for the Chevrolet Volt have to last 10 years.

GM earlier reported its agreement with 2 battery groups to make the concept a viable commercial car. It has also announced its plan to design small cars starting around 2010 to deliver the drivetrain architecture of Volt.

The Ford Motor Corp. has also unveiled a serial concept called the Airstream at the Detroit auto show. The difference lies on the Ballard hydrogen fuel cell instead of an engine and a generator as a range extender. The car features asymmetric windows and an entire body side that lifts up. One striking feature of the concept car is the modern lava lamp with soothing flame images on the circular LCD.

Volvo, Ford’s safety marquee, is boosting its reputation with the introduction of the Volvo XC60, a small sport utility vehicle that features an anti-collision system called CitySense. The latter is scheduled to be offered within a couple of years. CitySense uses optical radar to monitor the speed of the car in front of it. It will use “pretension” Volvo brakes to prevent impacts at speeds up to 30 kilometer per hour.

Then, along with a dense air-and-fuel mixture near the spark plug, the same increases torque and lessens turbo lag. The aftermath is a car with improved fuel mileage and emissions.

To finish it all off, Mazdaspeed 3’s hatchback body is reinforced with gussets at the strut tower tops and rear wheel wells. It also has a brace across the cowl, a thicker front crossmember and an underbody plate. Aside from that it is given self-leveling Xenon headlamps, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers and stereo, which are not found on the regular model.

#Method1-’Relay and brother’ method.(I call it so.)

#Purpose-This method uses two PSUs.One will be called as PSU1 that will power the motherboard(Yes those 7800GTX too).Other PSU(PSU2) will be used to keep those RAID arrays,DVD burners,Fans,Lights and water cooling pumps turning.Sounds quite easy?,but the problem is that the PSU2 will not boot,as it is not connected to the Mainboard,and from there to the power swicth.Read on!.

#What you need-
1.Good quality ATX PSUs,diffrent wattages and ampere ratings won’t hurt.
2.Some wires.
3.Wire strippers.
4.Simple 12V dc relay,easily found at automotive spares stores.(High quality,please!)
5.Insulating tape.
*Optional-(These things can save the warranty!!)
6.One ATX 20/24 pin Female connector(I pulled out from a junk board)
7.One 4 pin Female Molex connector(I got from a burnt case fan)
8.Heat Shrink tubing.
9.Soldering iron and wire.

#Getting hands dirty-
1.Firstly get the relay and solder/tape wires to all four points on the relay,shown here(you may use diffrent color codes)-
>+12V=Yellow
>Ground=Black
>Switch short1=Green.
>Switch shotr2=Blue.
Put heat shrink tubing or Tape on the joints.

2.Find the 4 pin Female Molex connector.Connect the +12v&Ground wires from the relay,respectively to the yellow and black wires on the Female molex.Cover the joints as usual.
OR
Cut a Molex connector from PSU1,connect the yellow and black wires directly ‘From’ PSU1 ‘To’ the respective points on the Relay.(Forget about any warranty now)

3.Get the Female ATX 20 pin connector.Connect it to the Male 20 pin connector of PSU2.

4.Look for a Green wire in the bunch,notice on which pin, among 20 Pins it is connected.Mark this pin on the Female connector.Also mark any one of many black wire connecting pins on the same connector.There are many black wires,so spotting them is easy.

5.Disconnect the connectors,keep PSU aside for a while.

6.As you know where the green and black wires are present on the Connector,Solder green and Blue wires to the Detached Female connector according to the markings.Tape them as usual.

7.Solder these newly joined green & Blue wire to the respective points on the Relay(any of Switch short)
OR
Cut the Green and any of black wires from PSU2 ATX20 pin connector.Join these wires directly to the ’swicth short’ points on the Relay(Voids warranty)

PSU are ready!

#Connections-
1.Connect the ATX 20 pin connector from PSU1 to the Mainboard.

2.Connect P4 +12v ATX 4 pin(Square)connector from PSU1 to the Mainboard.

3.Power all molex devices like HDDs,DVDs,Fans,etc from the PSU2.

(You are done if you did not use optional connectors and joined the wires directly)

4.Join recently made ATX 20 pin Female Connector to PSU2,We have already joined it to the ‘Switch short’ pins on the relay.

5.Plug in 4 Pin Female Molex,we just made, to the free molex connector of PSU1.Those wires will power the Relay.

6.Connect both PSU to the wall sockets(or UPS)

#Powering UP!-
If everything went in order,the PC will boot as usual.It will be only more stable than before!!.You will hear the Relay click when it starts.That says it is alive!.
Now What?Stop admirng and start pumping VCore!!!

#Beneifits of ‘Relay and brother’ method-
1.You have much more power now.Two 500W PSU can give 1Kw(!!!) of blasting power in this way.
2.You are using the connectors hence,not voiding the warranty if done correctly.
3You can remove this setup in a Jiffy.
4.After disconnecting,you can use PSUs just as normal.
5.This system is very portable,Just move the Realy,with both connectors where you need them!

#The Math behind-Overclocked components need much more power than usual.On some day you may hit on the the fact that even 550W PSU is unable to maintain stable voltages.The idea is simple,’Divide and Rule’.We are dividing the load upon two PSUs that will naturally give more power and stablity than single unit.Every standard ATX PSU have a Green wire that signals ‘Power on’ to the PSU when computer boots up.This wire is connected through the motherboard to the power switch on the cabinet.As we want to turn on second PSU too,I used a relay that will act as an automatic power on swicth.This relay consumes power from PSU1 Molex connector.When the PSU1 boots up,Relay gets activated alongwith.This relay then turns on PSU2 by shorting its Green and Ground wire.PSU2 boots up as a result.All this process happens in a splitsecond,both PSUs appear to boot simultaneously.
SIMPLE!!

#Important Tips-
1PSU store enough current that can give a nasty shock if you are not careful.Disconnect the PSU from wall socket,then press the PC boot swich once,this will discharge any charge that may be stored.Turn on the monitor too,if it is plugged through the PSU.I strongly recommend rubber gloves and foot wear though.

2.Two PSU may not fit in a regular case.They will also generate much more heat(Which may hamper overclocking).You may want to keep the PSUs outside the case and run only the needed wires into the case.

3.If you are keeping PSU outside the Case,Fit a nice 120mm Fan in the empty area,where PSU generally fits.This will greatly help the airflow.

4.If somehow you managed to fix two PSUs in the case,bundle off the wires,as there will be a big mess.

5.Relay is the heart of this system,Use only high quality Relays to ensure clean power.I suggest the ones that are used to control Car A/C Compressors.

6.All joint should be very tight,use Heat Shrink tubing wherever possible.

7.Read carefully where I have said PSU1 and PSU2, any mistake here and you may blow up the component.

8.Window mod the externally placed PSUs to add a GeekY touch.
