How to Maintain Your Lawn Mower

It’s the same every year! The end of winter is signaled by longer days, budding trees and the return of the dawn chorus. It is also the time of year that our thoughts start turning to the need to begin tending to our lawn again. Grass that has laid dormant over winter is now beginning to grow and those dreaded weeds are reappearing with gusto! So, how do we best prepare our lawn mower for the upcoming lawn mowing season?
Prepare Your Lawn
It might seem strange that in order to prepare your lawn mower you should first concentrate on your lawn. This is because over winter, particularly if it has been a cold one, rocks and stones could have migrated through your soil to the surface of your lawn.
Walk around your garden and remove any objects that are likely to interfere with your mower. It only takes a small rock to chip the cutting blade of your lawn mower.
Prepare Your Lawn Mower
The first thing to do is pull your lawn mower out of its winter home and clean off any dirt and cob webs. Whilst cleaning your mower check all the moving parts are still working and operational (apply grease and water dispersant as required and in accordance with your owners manual).
Check The Cutting Blade
Make sure you clean the underside of the lawn mower to ensure there is nothing obstructing the turning blade. For gas powered mowers consult the owners manual to ensure you turn your mower over the correct way; failure to do this could result in a flooded engine or worse.
Inspection Checks For Electric Mowers
There are a couple of simple checks that you can perform before starting up your electric mower for the first time this season.
Unravel the electric cable by feeding the cable through your closed hand. You are looking and feeling for damaged sections of the lead. If the lead appears kinked or the inner wires are exposed then you must replace the entire lead. Never operate an electrical device when the power cord is damaged.
Check the underside of the mower to ensure there are no foreign objects present that could damage the blade – you would be surprised at what can collect underneath a lawn mower over the winter period!
Inspection Tasks For Gas Powered Mowers
If you are unsure whether you are able to complete the following tasks then we recommend paying for a qualified mechanic to perform the annual servicing on your lawn mower.
However, for the mechanically minded the following tasks are relatively straight forward and when completed will help a rough running mower to perform much better;
1. Remove any old fuel that has been left in the tank (for gas powered mowers only) and replace with new. Old fuel does not burn efficiently and may clog up the filter in your mower.
2. Check the oil by removing the dipstick, cleaning it and then reinserting. Remove once again and check to make sure the oil is not a black smudgy mess. If it is then it is time to replace the oil. Consult your owners manual for guidance on how this is to be accomplished and the grade of oil that should be used.
3. Check the spark plug for oil or burnt carbon deposits. If either exist then it is best to replace the plug as well. Again, consult your owners manual for the correct type of plug that you will need to buy.
4. Remove the air filter and check to make sure that it is not clogged with oil and dirt. Clean it with an appropriate cleaner, dry and replace. Never operate a lawn mower without a filter as you will damage the engine.
Blade Sharpening
The next thing to consider is the blade. Physically look at the blade and make sure the cutting edge is smooth and free of damage. Stones and rocks will chip the blade making it less effective at cutting your grass. If the blade is dull looking then you may need to sharpen it; it is best to remove the blade and take to your local mower mechanic who will sharpen it for you.
If the blade is badly damaged then remove it and replace with a new one.
Happy Mowing!
By undertaking these simple tasks just prior to spring you will help to ensure that your lawn mower is running the most efficiently it can. A lawn mower that is operating efficiently is a lawn mower that will cut your grass in the quickest manner without breaking down and causing you a headache.
Mowing your lawn need not be a chore!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Why Lawn Mower Won’t Start?
There are lots of instances why lawn mower won’t starts. Maybe it’s too old, fuels are clogged off, some parts are loose or damaged and need to be replaced, etc. Before you bring to repair shop you should do some personal checks to save time and money. It’s just a 1-2-3 basic check of the equipment. Below are the checklists you can do by yourself.
• First, clean the equipments. Dirt is the major problems because it usually works on grounds and the blades produce dusts that clog the engine filter and fuel filters and other parts.
• Check the fuel, if it’s the gas is from a last couple of months removes it and replace with a fresh fuel. And add enough amounts to run the engine. Obviously the engine will not start if there is no fuel.
• Fuel and air filter maybe clogged because of residue or dust from the previous use. It needs replacement or cleaning to function well.
• Remove the spark plug and clean it or replaced it with a new one. Do double check that the spark plug is properly fitted back in this is because if the spark plug is not fixed properly the fuel cannot be ignited.
• Check the wiring connections maybe it loose and need to be tight up.
• Maybe there is water in the carburetor. It must be drain with the drain plug or if there is no available drain it must repeatedly pull the starter cord to clear away the water.
Once you do all the listed items and the lawn mower won’t start. It’s the time to bring to the professional who has the equipments and tools to solve and fix the problem.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Push Mower Parts and Spring Tune-ups
Lawn mower is a warm season ritual that some people look forward to with pleasure and others consider to be a chore. When you bring it out of mothballs after a long winter and it starts up the first time, it is a pleasure to use. If you have to wrestle with it and put up with a rough running mower, mowing the lawn is a job you would sooner do without. It doesn’t take much to change an unwelcome chore into an enjoyable pastime. All it takes is an hour’s time each year and a few inexpensive push mower parts.
If yours is a manual mower, there are very few push mower parts that you have to deal with. Aside from the occasional need to sharpen the blades, there is very little maintenance that has to be done. The plug-in electric models of mowers require very little maintenance, either, but their usefulness is limited.
Cordless electric mowers use batteries to run on. These, too, have few parts that need regular servicing or replacing other than the battery. It’s always best to choose rechargeable batteries for these and keep at least one spare charged up and ready to go.
As virtually maintenance free as these light-duty mowers are, they all have only limited usefulness. This is why walk behind gas engine mowers are still the most popular for domestic use. They do create noise and fumes, but these can be kept to a minimum if the mower is properly maintained and a few basic push mower parts are replaced regularly.
The spark plug is arguably the most important of all the push mower parts on a gas powered lawn mower. This is the part that keeps the engine running smoothly. Smart users always buy a new spark plug at the beginning of the season. If you replace your air filter and change your oil at the same time, you will get even more out of your mower. Replacing these few things is inexpensive and not time consuming, yet adds years to the life of a mower.
You will probably want to replace these push mower parts at the beginning of each new mowing season. There are also a few quick jobs you should do at the end of the season as well. Clean the mower thoroughly before you put it away. If there is any gas left in the tank, use an additive to make sure it doesn’t go stale over the winter. If you don’t do this, you may need to drain the gas and replace it after the mower has stood idle throughout the winter months.
When spring comes around, you will probably only have to spent a few dollars on a spark plug and air filter. If you do discover you need new mower blades or other parts, you can find everything you need online, including instructions for repair and detailed push mower parts catalogs. With a basic tool kit and mechanical skill, you will be able to do most repair jobs yourself.
All it takes is a little time and care and your mower will be a pleasure to own and run. Instead of worrying about your mower, you will enjoy the opportunity to get outdoors and spend some time in your backyard.

With spring just around the corner it is time to check the lawnmower to be sure it will do its job when the time comes. It has been sitting in the garage all winter and no one started it up or even looked at it. No matter what type of lawnmower you have, push, electric, gas, riding, tractor or any other the parts need to be cleaned and looked at. Whether your lawnmower is many years old or just a year old a lawnmower part will wear out and need replacement.

It often surprises people when they discover that there are degree programs in fields like materials handling. “How hard can it be?” they ask. Actually, it can be very hard. It is quite another, though, to manage the logistics of a warehouse supplies company that is acres in size and must run like clockwork.

Handy Tips On Buying Lawn Mower Parts

Wear and tear to the mower is one of the most common complains when it comes to lawn mower repair, another is damage. Wear and tear occurs with use, a perfect example is the blades, which often become dull after a while. If you do not sharpen them, you will find that it simply cannot perform as it once did. Damage often occurs when the it has run over an object within your yard.
You likely assume that it will be easy to find lawn mower parts for replacements; however, it is not always easy by any means. However, garden warehouses and parts catalogs are the best place to find them. If you are like many lawnmower owners, you may not have a catalog or access to one, then you should visit a garden warehouse.
The internet is a fabulous resource for finding the lawn mower parts you need. On the internet, you have access to literally thousands of sellers all over the world, right in the comfort of your own home. However, it is necessary that you have information about your lawn mower such as the model and brand.
The most common lawn mower parts needing replacing are tires, bolts, nuts, belts, and spark plugs. Spark plugs are necessary to the operation of your lawn mower; therefore, you might want to consider keeping a few extras on hand in case they are needed.
You might also want to consider some extra belts as well. These tend to wear out or break at about the same timeframe as the spark plugs. So keep extra spark plugs and belts on hand.
It is important no to be cheap when it comes to your lawn mower parts. Remember you almost always get exactly what you pay for. Cheaper parts generally mean little reliability. You want to be extra careful, especially if your mower is still under a warranty. Parts that are not of the same brand, could mean that your warranty will become null and void. The best thing for you to do is get the same brand of parts that came with your mower.

Lawn Mower Guide – How to Prepare your Lawn Mower for the Season
by admin on Jul.06, 2010, under Spark Plug Gap
Lawn Mower Guide – How to Prepare your Lawn Mower for the Season
Before we start mowing this spring we have to do a few maintenance checks. This lawn mower guide will help you get your mower in the right condition.
1. Replace the oil and use fresh gasoline. If you neglected to change the oil last season the gasoline has lost some of its energy and will cause starter problems. Consult your owners manual for oil recommendations. If you dont have the owners manual then check with a local shop that sells and repairs lawn mowers.
2. Replace the spark plug. A new spark will save you a lot of future problems and is inexpensive to change. You can find the type and gap information in the owners manual or you can take the spark plug to a service shop or gas station.
3. Replace air filter. If your air filter is dirty it should be replaced immediately. Dirty air filters overwork the engine, which wastes fuel. A clean filter is also better for the environment. As a general rule, air filters need to be replaced after 25 hours of use. Only foam filters should be cleaned with water.
4. Check the blade. Is it dull, broken or bent? A dull blade can be sharpened with a file or power tool but never try to do it on the mower. You can find a grinding tool for sharpening blades that can be attached to your drill or a utility tool, such as a Dremel.
If you are unsure about doing it yourself then take the blade to a local mower maintenance store and, for a few bucks, you can have it done for you. If your blade is broken or bent it needs to be replaced.
5. Check the drive belt. If your lawn mower has a drive belt check it for lack of resistance and wear. A drive belt with correct tension should be able to move side ways about half an inch when pulled with one finger.
6. Check the tires and wheels. Check tires/wheels and loose parts. Check the air pressure in the tires and lubricate the wheels.
7. Clean the mower deck. To prevent the engine from starting, disconnect the spark wire from the spark plug. Then use a soft brush and water to carefully clean the outside of the mower deck around the engine. Next, turn the mower 90 degrees on its side so the carburetor is facing up and clean the inside of the deck, using a wooden stick to remove heavy grass build-up.
The Basics Of Lawn Mower Repair
by admin on Mar.21, 2010, under Best Spark Plug
Lawn mower repair can be tricky sometimes, since mowers tend to show their problems in other areas than the part that needs replacing or repairing. The only way to repair mowers is to eliminate each cause for a problem until you have an answer. This can take a lot of time, in some cases. You should consider whether repairing your lawnmower yourself rather than getting it fixed by a professional is really worth the trouble.
If the problem with the mower is very simple or easy to fix, for example, putting in new spark plugs or mower blades, with a repair instruction manual as well as a little know how, it is possible to fix these minor lawn mower problems yourself. This will save you money in the long run.
Maintenance – The Best Repair
The first rule of mower repair is maintenance. By maintaining your lawn mower regularly you can avoid many repair problems. Most problems with lawnmowers stem from neglect of the machine. Make maintenance a habit.
Clean your lawn mower blades after every use. Simply scrape the underneath of the mower. Then use an air compressor to clean out other places such as the engine, carburetor and air filter. One of the added benefits of giving your mower a little bit of a clean up after use is that it will help preserve the mowers looks.
Diagnosing a Problem
The best way to diagnose a problem with a mower that needs repair is to consider the problem. Is it that it would not start? Or when it is running, does it sound terrible? When you know the problem, you then need to find the cause.
Often, a mower that would not start may be out of fuel or the ratio of fuel mix is not correct. By ruling out each thing related to the starting of the mower, you will eventually find the solution. This process works for most lawn mower problems.
Severe Problems
Through your elimination methods, you may find that there is something seriously wrong with your mower. If this happens, it will need to be repaired by a professional mower repairman. Often, the cost of putting your lawn mower in for repairs can be expensive and you may want to consider the costs of repairs vs. the cost of a new machine, in terms of money spent and the amount of time the mower will take to repair.
If at any time you are unsure of the problem with a lawn mower that needs repairs, it is best to get a professional to take a look at the mower and provide a quote on the costs for the repairs.
If you are looking to buy a new lawn mower you should seriously think about what and how you will do if you need to repair your mower, Mower Repair is something you should know a little more about.
Get a Better Grass Cut With a Sharp Mower Blade
by admin on Mar.18, 2010, under Best Spark Plug
Keeping your lawnmower blades sharp and well lubricated will not only prolong the life of your mower, it will also give you a better-looking lawn. Bottom line! Rotary mower blades spin and cut grass blades at a very high rate of speed. And if you’re curious about the rate of speed that a typical mower blade rotates at, it is generally around 2,400 to 2,600 rpm. Even at this high rate of speed however, if the mowers’ blades are chipped, nicked or just dull, you will not be getting a very good grass cut.
Check the Sharpness of Your Mower Blade
If your gas tank leaks or spills when tipped, just syphon out what you can before you try to sharpen the blade. Most mowers will not leak when tipped. Regardless, you should also temporarily disconnect the spark plug. This step is highly recommended if your mower has an automatic start function. Remember, better safe than sorry.
If you use an electric mower, then you’ll obviously want to ensure that the power source to your mower is not plugged in.
Use a Scrap 2×4 to Wedge the Blade
Once the mower is turned over, use a suitable block of wood that you can wedge between the blade and its housing to prevent it from moving. You’ll need the right size of wrench and some durable work gloves.
Go ahead and remove your blade from the mower. Wipe it down by removing any dried grass or dirt. This is the best time to chip away and remove any stubborn grass clusters that are clinging to the mowers’ under-deck. If you have a bench vice, secure the mower blade in it to prepare for sharpening. Check out any deep nicks that have likely been caused by stones and sticks. Depending on the size of any nicks present, you may have to use a larger or coarser file. A general purpose metal file will generally do the trick.
Oil the mower blade lightly with fine machine oil. Then take the file in both hands and run it across the beveled edge in a smooth motion from the center to the edge away from your body. Take care to keep the file at the same angle as the bevel as much as possible. For those without the skill, special angled clamps are available.
Don’t file the flat edge, unless it’s necessary in order to smooth off a nick that has pushed metal out, making it not flat at that spot.
An effective technique for sharping is to maintain a steady and even amount of pressure when filing. Also try to keep the total number of strokes on each side of the blade equal. What you are shooting for with your sharpening stroke is symmetry. You are looking to achieve a balance of metal and weight on each side of the nut hole.
If the blade is unbalanced it will create an irritating vibration when running and it will also cut less effectively.
The best tool for sharpening a mower blade is an electric bench grinder. But if you don’t use care, you will ruin the cutting blade. Some models of bench grinders make the task easier because they utilize attached clamps that will allow you to grind the blade at the perfect angle.
Without clamps, it’s hard to do a good job. You need a steady hand and a confident mindset. The risk is that too much metal will be ground off too fast in spots. Blade gouges caused by eradicte surface grinding may destroy the blade. As with most things, use the right tools, take the time to set up proper clamping and you can actually sharpen the blade quite quickly. Approved safety eye wear must be worn! This is not an option if you value your vision.
This bit of maintenance is really pretty simple. Your reward is a better cut for your lawn and you’ll save a few bucks too. But if you don’t have the tools or the patience, you can just make a trip to your local garden centre or hardware store and pick up a brand new replacement blade.
