They say that the hardest part in finishing something is getting started. And that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. These refer to the utmost importance of how the starting point defines the kind of travel you will be going to get. In the auto lingo, the ignition system is one important system to get the engine starting, or to get the ball rolling, so to speak.
Igniting the fuel at the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work is the main objective of the ignition system of a Mercedes Benz. It utilizes components responsible for making the spark. They include the spark plug, the coil and the distributor. Among these three, it is the distributor which proves very useful as it handles several jobs. Aside from the fact that it distributes the high voltage from the coil to the correct cylinder, it also does the job of breaking the current to the coil. Comprising the distributor is the rotating arm inside as well as a cam in the distributor shaft.
But the device which distributes electricity from the ignition coils to the sparkplug wires at the right timing is the Mercedes distributor cap. Usually made of hard plastic and small amount of copper, the distributor cap houses the distributor rotor, rotating as it receives current from the ignition coils and passes it on to the copper portion of the cap, which then passes it on to the spark plugs.
The Mercedes distributor cap is the one that is often affected by heat and vibration, with the constant high voltage it encounters. Thus, it should be a habit to have it inspected regularly. If not, carbon tracking will form in the cap. This will surely cause misfires in the engine. Experts suggest replacing defective distributor caps every two years or every 15,000 miles of distance traveled. While older vehicle owner must be more aware as their caps and rotors are more prone to wear out.
Having the cap and the rotor inspected during night time is more advisable as they can easily see the lights that they emit from the current. It is not advisable to touch them, though, electricity of up to 20,000 run through them.

Throughout history, rigorous research and development was dedicated to the production of vehicles. The systems and components that make the automobile the machine that it is has constantly been reinvented to provide the world the most efficient of use. One of these systems, mainly the ignition system and its parts, proves to be an important part of the overall engine system that basically gives life to the machine. The primary task of the ignition system in Mercedes Benz vehicle is to ignite the fuel at exactly the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work. It is usually switched on and off through a lock switch operated with a key or a code patch. If the ignition system fires at the wrong time, power will fall and gas consumption and emissions can increase. Because of this task, the ignition system is considered an important part of the overall engine system.
And for that spark to be made, subcomponents are needed to do such tasks. This includes the sparkplugs, ignition coil and the distributor. The distributor deserves more credit as performs various functions like distributing high voltage from the coil to the correct cylinder and breaking the current to the coil.
Working in tie-up with the distributor cap in the distributor assembly, the Mercedes distributor rotor distributes electricity from the ignition coils to the spark plug wires at the right timing. It switches high-sparking voltage from the spark plugs to fire in correct sequences.
The metal part of the Mercedes distributor rotor contacts the central high voltage cable from the coil via a spring loaded carbon brush. The metal part of the rotor arm passes close to (but does not touch) the output contacts which connect via high tension cables to the spark plug of each cylinder. As the rotor spins within the distributor, electrical current is able to jump the small gaps created between the rotor arm and the contacts due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil.
The firing end of the Mercedes distributor rotor is from where the high tension spark jumps to each of the cap terminals. It should not be worn because wearing out will result in resistance to the high tension spark. A worn firing end of the rotor requires immediate replacement. The rotors are mounted on the upper end of the distributor shaft. Thus, the Mercedes distributor rotor must have a snug fit on the end of the shaft. With other designs, two screws are used to attach the rotor to a plate on the top of the distributor shaft. Built-in locators ensure correct reassembly. These are found at the rotor and holes in the plate. One of which is round while the other is square.

Thermal Performance, on the other hand is the term used for the temperature that the spark plug is firing. It must be must be kept low enough to prevent pre-ignition, but high enough to prevent fouling.
The spark plug’s firing end can be affected by the internal environment of the combustion chamber. Proper operation of the combustion chamber can be indicated by a light brownish discoloration of the tip of the spark plug while a malfunction may be indicated by other conditions.
A Mercedes Benz spark plug can either be hot or cold. The hot type has a larger surface exposed to the combustion gasses. It dissipates heat quickly and its firing end heats up quickly. The cold type, on the other hand, has a smaller surface exposed to the combustion gasses, dissipates heat slowly and has a firing end that heats up slowly. Whether a spark plug is hot or cold is known as the heat range of the spark plug.
The spark plug’s heat range has many factors that can affect it. Some of these are the types of materials used, the length of the insulator and the surface area of the plug that is exposed within the combustion chamber.
What are the most common problems when it comes to your Mercedes Benz spark plugs? First is detonation, which is practically the spark plug’s worst enemy. A light detonation can be indicated by a small black or gray spots on the core nose of the spark plug while a severe detonation can be indicated by insulators that are cracked or chipped. The spark plug is damaged by both the elevated temperatures and the accompanying shock wave, or concussion. Second is pre-ignition which is defined as ignition of the air/fuel mixture before the pre-set ignition timing mark. Common indications are melted center, ground electrodes or a melted insulator. One of its causes can be a spark plug that’s too hot. This can severely damage not only the spark plug itself but also intake valves and brake pistons. Pre-ignition also causes detonation. Third is fouling, which commonly occurs when the spark plug tip temperature is insufficient to burn off carbon, fuel, oil or other deposits. Fouling can either be wet or dry. Common indicators are soft, black, sooty, dry-looking deposits for dry fouling and black oily coating for wet fouling. Fourth is misfire. A spark plug is said to have misfired when enough voltage has not been delivered to light off all fuel present in the combustion chamber at the proper moment of the power stroke.
