How to Maintain Your Lawn Mower

It’s the same every year! The end of winter is signaled by longer days, budding trees and the return of the dawn chorus. It is also the time of year that our thoughts start turning to the need to begin tending to our lawn again. Grass that has laid dormant over winter is now beginning to grow and those dreaded weeds are reappearing with gusto! So, how do we best prepare our lawn mower for the upcoming lawn mowing season?
Prepare Your Lawn
It might seem strange that in order to prepare your lawn mower you should first concentrate on your lawn. This is because over winter, particularly if it has been a cold one, rocks and stones could have migrated through your soil to the surface of your lawn.
Walk around your garden and remove any objects that are likely to interfere with your mower. It only takes a small rock to chip the cutting blade of your lawn mower.
Prepare Your Lawn Mower
The first thing to do is pull your lawn mower out of its winter home and clean off any dirt and cob webs. Whilst cleaning your mower check all the moving parts are still working and operational (apply grease and water dispersant as required and in accordance with your owners manual).
Check The Cutting Blade
Make sure you clean the underside of the lawn mower to ensure there is nothing obstructing the turning blade. For gas powered mowers consult the owners manual to ensure you turn your mower over the correct way; failure to do this could result in a flooded engine or worse.
Inspection Checks For Electric Mowers
There are a couple of simple checks that you can perform before starting up your electric mower for the first time this season.
Unravel the electric cable by feeding the cable through your closed hand. You are looking and feeling for damaged sections of the lead. If the lead appears kinked or the inner wires are exposed then you must replace the entire lead. Never operate an electrical device when the power cord is damaged.
Check the underside of the mower to ensure there are no foreign objects present that could damage the blade – you would be surprised at what can collect underneath a lawn mower over the winter period!
Inspection Tasks For Gas Powered Mowers
If you are unsure whether you are able to complete the following tasks then we recommend paying for a qualified mechanic to perform the annual servicing on your lawn mower.
However, for the mechanically minded the following tasks are relatively straight forward and when completed will help a rough running mower to perform much better;
1. Remove any old fuel that has been left in the tank (for gas powered mowers only) and replace with new. Old fuel does not burn efficiently and may clog up the filter in your mower.
2. Check the oil by removing the dipstick, cleaning it and then reinserting. Remove once again and check to make sure the oil is not a black smudgy mess. If it is then it is time to replace the oil. Consult your owners manual for guidance on how this is to be accomplished and the grade of oil that should be used.
3. Check the spark plug for oil or burnt carbon deposits. If either exist then it is best to replace the plug as well. Again, consult your owners manual for the correct type of plug that you will need to buy.
4. Remove the air filter and check to make sure that it is not clogged with oil and dirt. Clean it with an appropriate cleaner, dry and replace. Never operate a lawn mower without a filter as you will damage the engine.
Blade Sharpening
The next thing to consider is the blade. Physically look at the blade and make sure the cutting edge is smooth and free of damage. Stones and rocks will chip the blade making it less effective at cutting your grass. If the blade is dull looking then you may need to sharpen it; it is best to remove the blade and take to your local mower mechanic who will sharpen it for you.
If the blade is badly damaged then remove it and replace with a new one.
Happy Mowing!
By undertaking these simple tasks just prior to spring you will help to ensure that your lawn mower is running the most efficiently it can. A lawn mower that is operating efficiently is a lawn mower that will cut your grass in the quickest manner without breaking down and causing you a headache.
Mowing your lawn need not be a chore!

A Few Words About Lawn Mowing Maintenance & Repair

Lawn Mower Maintenance
I have been in the lawn mowing industry for many years and am writing to share my experience on lawn mower maintenance and purchasing. For my personal/home mower, I do the following things:
1) Change the oil and filter at least on time per season (I always carefully read the owner’s manual and follow the factories recommendations. At the very minimum, I change the oil and filter at least one time per season.)
2) Replace the factory blade with a mulching blade (I have had best results with a product called gator blade. By changing to a mulching blade, I have been able to eliminate the need for bagging grass and improve the look of my yard)
3) replace the spark plug at the beginning of each season (spark plugs generally cost less than two dollars and often make the lawn mower easier to start, especially if the old spark plug is very worn)
4) Check and clean the air filter every 3 cuts (a dirty air filter can damage your engine and make your mower much harder to start. I highly recommend checking and cleaning your air filter on a regular basis)
Lawn Mower Repair
If you are uncomfortable repairing your lawn mower yourself or have a complicated problem with your lawn mower, you should consult a professional who works on lawnmowers on a regular basis. You may find a professional by typing your cities name lawn mower repair into Google (for example, you may type, “Downers Grove Lawn Mower Repair” into Google). Once you generate a list of people in your area who do Lawn Mower Repair, you should research the companies you find a bit to find out whether or not they are trustworthy and sufficiently knowledgeable to do the job. To do this, I often ask for the recommendations of my family, friends, and other people in the lawn mowing industry. Often times, personal recommendations are a great way to find a trustworthy business.
Furthermore, once you find a professional that you want to take your lawn mower to, I strongly recommend getting a clear estimate for the price to complete the work before authorizing them to fix your machine. Often time’s repairs can exceed the value of a lawn mower and it makes more sense, economically, and it makes more sense to dump an old lawn mower than it does to invest a 0 dollars into an old one.
In the case your lawn mower is old and not worth fixing, I strongly recommend investing either in a Honda Self Propelled Lawn Mower or Toro Personal Pace. In my opinion, Honda’s are the best lawn mower for someone that is willing to pay 0-0 in order to get a great machine that lasts a long time. However, if you have a smaller budget, 0-0, I strongly recommend the Toro Personal Pace because it is very reliable, well built, and features a very unique self propelled system that makes it very easy to use. The personal pace system actually varies its speed based on how hard you push, the harder you push, the faster it goes. I have owned several Honda’s and several Toro’s and recommend both to my family and friends depending on their budget and unique needs.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Why Lawn Mower Won’t Start?
There are lots of instances why lawn mower won’t starts. Maybe it’s too old, fuels are clogged off, some parts are loose or damaged and need to be replaced, etc. Before you bring to repair shop you should do some personal checks to save time and money. It’s just a 1-2-3 basic check of the equipment. Below are the checklists you can do by yourself.
• First, clean the equipments. Dirt is the major problems because it usually works on grounds and the blades produce dusts that clog the engine filter and fuel filters and other parts.
• Check the fuel, if it’s the gas is from a last couple of months removes it and replace with a fresh fuel. And add enough amounts to run the engine. Obviously the engine will not start if there is no fuel.
• Fuel and air filter maybe clogged because of residue or dust from the previous use. It needs replacement or cleaning to function well.
• Remove the spark plug and clean it or replaced it with a new one. Do double check that the spark plug is properly fitted back in this is because if the spark plug is not fixed properly the fuel cannot be ignited.
• Check the wiring connections maybe it loose and need to be tight up.
• Maybe there is water in the carburetor. It must be drain with the drain plug or if there is no available drain it must repeatedly pull the starter cord to clear away the water.
Once you do all the listed items and the lawn mower won’t start. It’s the time to bring to the professional who has the equipments and tools to solve and fix the problem.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Tips For Maintaining Petrol Lawn Mowers
Many people that buy petrol lawn mowers do not realize that they need to do a bit more than change the oil and make sure the blade is in good condition. In particular, you should always make sure that you change or clean the spark plug on a regular basis. This will also give you an opportunity to check for cracks in the wire casing, as well as help you understand the overall condition of the engine.
If you have ever performed routine maintenance on an auto mobile engine, then you may realize that certain types of corrosion or discolouration on the spark plugs can serve as vital indicators about engine wear. For example, if the tip of the plug has black, oily reside on it, then you know that the engine is burning oil. While a lawn mower engine is much smaller and less complicated than an auto mobile engine, it still works on the same principles. Therefore, when it comes to maintaining garden lawn mowers, you can look at spark plugs in order to estimate how long the mower will last.
During the process of maintaining petrol lawnmowers, you should also make it a point to change the air filter. Unfortunately, most people simply leave the filter in place for the life of the mower. Needless to say, when the filter gets clogged, it will deprive the engine of air, and cause the engine to die out more. Chances are, you would be amazed at how much better your lawn mower will perform when you change this filter on a regular basis.

Handy Tips On Buying Lawn Mower Parts

Handy Tips On Buying Lawn Mower Parts
It is highly likely that regardless of what brand of lawn mower you own or how expensive it was, at some point, repairs would be needed. Even the best of lawn mowers often begin to fail after use and needs some repairs. This is why always having at least a few lawn mower parts on hand is necessary.
Wear and tear to the mower is one of the most common complains when it comes to lawn mower repair, another is damage. Wear and tear occurs with use, a perfect example is the blades, which often become dull after a while. If you do not sharpen them, you will find that it simply cannot perform as it once did. Damage often occurs when the it has run over an object within your yard.
You likely assume that it will be easy to find lawn mower parts for replacements; however, it is not always easy by any means. However, garden warehouses and parts catalogs are the best place to find them. If you are like many lawnmower owners, you may not have a catalog or access to one, then you should visit a garden warehouse.
The internet is a fabulous resource for finding the lawn mower parts you need. On the internet, you have access to literally thousands of sellers all over the world, right in the comfort of your own home. However, it is necessary that you have information about your lawn mower such as the model and brand.
The most common lawn mower parts needing replacing are tires, bolts, nuts, belts, and spark plugs. Spark plugs are necessary to the operation of your lawn mower; therefore, you might want to consider keeping a few extras on hand in case they are needed.
You might also want to consider some extra belts as well. These tend to wear out or break at about the same timeframe as the spark plugs. So keep extra spark plugs and belts on hand.
It is important no to be cheap when it comes to your lawn mower parts. Remember you almost always get exactly what you pay for. Cheaper parts generally mean little reliability. You want to be extra careful, especially if your mower is still under a warranty. Parts that are not of the same brand, could mean that your warranty will become null and void. The best thing for you to do is get the same brand of parts that came with your mower.
Summary:
It is highly likely that regardless of what brand of lawn mower you own or how expensive it was, at some point, repairs would be needed. Even the best of lawn mowers often begin to fail after use and needs some repairs. This is why always having at least a few lawn mower parts on hand is necessary.

Lawn Care and Mowing Tips

Lawn Care and Mowing Tips
Maintaining a nice looking lawn does not have to be a difficult affair. To keep your lawn looking great, follow some of these easy tips and you will be well on your way. Perhaps one of the most important tips is to mow regularly. This does not imply that you must mow on the same day every week, but rather, it is important to keep the grass at a consistent height. Allowing grass to grow too high, or cutting it too frequently, will damage the lawn. An evenly cut lawn requires much less effort to mow and is also more visually pleasant.
In general, a lawn should be cut in the cool season when the grass has reached a height of about 3.5 inches. In the warm season, you will want to mow as the lawn reaches about 2.5 inches. No matter the height of the grass, never cut more than a third of the grass height because taking too much off at once may damage the lawn. When grass is damaged, it may die reducing the strength of the lawn overall. When grass dies, it can create patchy spots where there is enough nutrients available for weeds to take hold and grow.
Just as it is important not to cut too much off at once, you must also ensure that your mower blade is not dull. A dull blade does nothing but shred up the grass as it comes into contact with it. When the grass is torn up by a dull blade, dead and patchy spots will begin to appear in the lawn allowing weeds to eventually take hold. Check your blade every time you mow to make sure it is still sharp. Before you do this, however, be sure to disconnect spark plug wires. A recoil start motor may fire up if the blade is simply turned.
Be sure to change up the pattern in which you mow. Mowing in the same direction every time will train the grass to grow in a certain direction, eventually giving it a flat look. Before you actually begin mowing, however, walk over the lawn and look for potential obstacles. Sticks, stones, toys, and other objects can potentially damage the mower or injure someone nearby. Also, be aware of bumps or other spots that stand up in the lawn as these may cause the blade to go into the ground and possibly damage it.
You should also avoid cutting the grass when it is wet. This is a safety issue, and may also result in an uneven cut for the lawn. Wet grass also tends to foul up the mower housing and may clog up grass clipping bags. Absolutely avoid mowing on a hill or sloped grade when the grass is wet because it is all too easy for operator to slip up in these cases. Riding mowers may also lose their traction and tip over in these cases.
Make sure to follow safety guidelines closely.

How to Change an Air Filter on your Riding Lawn Mower
by admin on Aug.19, 2010, under Spark Plug Wires
How to Change an Air Filter on your Riding Lawn Mower
There are a variety of different style air filters on a variety of different brands of engines. Always refer to your Operator’s Manual or Engine Operator’s Manual if you are not sure.
Use: eReplacementParts.com for Finding Compatible MTD Lawn Mower Parts.
Follow these simple steps to successfully change the air filter in your lawn mower.
Be sure to replace your filter with one that fits properly. Air filters can be purchased on this site and where mower parts are sold.
Make sure you have the proper tools before beginning this project.
Under no circumstances should you start or run your mower with the air cleaner assembly or air filter removed. Doing so can pull debris into the engine and damage it.
Begin by placing the riding mower on a flat, level surface.
Make sure the engine is cool and, open the hood.
Begin by disconnecting the spark plug wire.
Clean the air filter area of any debris.
Remove the air filter cover.
Remove the air filter. The air filter is most commonly made of pleated paper.
If your engine’s air cleaner is equipped with a pre-filter, remove it for cleaning. The pre-filter is most commonly made of foam and can be serviced by washing with liquid detergent and water. If it’s excessively dirty, replace it. Allow the pre-filter to dry before installation.
Install the cleaned or new pre-filter. Then install the new air filter.
Replace the air filter cover.
Reconnect the spark plug wire or wires and you’re good to go!
How to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall This Year
by admin on Aug.13, 2010, under Spark Plug Wires
How to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall This Year
Hemingway once said, “America is the land of wide lawns and narrow minds.” Now, I don’t know about narrow minds, but we definitely love our lawns. Fall is one of the most important times of the year to perform lawn care maintenance.
The process you need to follow will vary with the type of turf on your lawn. The two main types of turf grasses are cool season and warm season. The main difference is that cool season grasses require regular maintenance throughout the fall and winter seasons, while warm season grasses need to be prepped for the following spring. Common cool season grasses are ryegrasses, fescues, bluegrasses, and bentgrasses. Common warm season grasses include St. Augustinegrass, Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, and Buffalograss. If you are unsure what type you have on your lawn, you can take a sample to your local county extension and find out which type you have. The most important thing to remember is that maintenance doesn’t end when the grass stops growing.
The process of fall lawn care consists of the following steps:
* Test Your Soil
* Apply Herbicides for Weed Control
* Water
* Fertilize
* Mow
* Seed or Sod
* Remove Leaves and Thatch
* Maintain Equipment
Test Your Soil
The first thing you should do this season is perform a soil test to determine levels of nutrients, pH and other factors that affect the growth of your lawn. These results will help you understand what your soil needs this fall. If you need to reduce the acidity in your soil, you should apply lime. If alkalinity should be reduced, then you should apply sulfur. The Cooperative Extension Service of state universities will usually perform a soil test for a reasonable fee. You can contact them or a local service to determine how you should collect samples and where to send them.
Apply Herbicides for Weed Control
Many broadleaf weeds start to show their ugly faces in the fall. Dandelions, plantain, clover and creeping charlie are just some of the perennial weeds that come out to play. If the weeds are spread out and few in number, you can spot treat them with an herbicide. Spray container products make it easy to do spot treatments. You should complete this task while temperatures are still above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you carefully evaluate the number and types of weeds in your lawn. It is not necessary to apply herbicides over your entire lawn unless there is significant infestation. Don’t worry about crabgrass and other annual weed-like grasses. These are controlled more effectively in the spring.
Water
Even though temperatures are cooler and the growth of your grass is slowing down, the lawn still needs to be watered. This is often one of the most neglected areas of fall lawn care. Visions of cool fall and winter weather often cause lawn owners to take a vacation and forget about their lawns. But, you should continue to water until the ground is cold and freezing temperatures are on the horizon. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, you will need to use compressed air to blow out the pipes and sprinkler heads before damage occurs from a freeze.
Fertilize
If you are a lawn fanatic like me, you can make two applications of fertilizer, once now and another in the late stages of fall (late October/ early November). This will provide nutrients to your lawn over a longer growth period. Late season fertilizing often causes lawns to be the first to grow in the spring. However, the longer you wait to fertilize, the less likely it is to be beneficial. When in doubt, simply skip the final application. If your soil test indicates that your lawn has a shortage of phosphorus, then you may consider using a ‘winterizing’ type of fertilizer. Otherwise, leftover spring fertilizer or a weed and feed fertilizer is sufficient. One final thing to avoid is slow-release fertilizers. During this time of year, soil has a lower level of microbial activity which means it takes longer to break down fertilizer and make its nutrients available to the grass.
Mow
You should continue to mow your lawn throughout the fall until growth stops. It is important to keep your grass 2″ to 2 – 1/2″ tall during fall. If your grass gets too long, it will mat and risk lawn diseases like snow mold. However, if you cut it too short (less than 2″), you can diminish the lawn’s ability to make and store food for growth in the spring.
Seed or Sod
This is not always a necessary lawn care practice, but this time of year is the best time to establish or repair a lawn by seeding or sodding. Seeding and sodding should be completed as soon as possible before really cold weather sets in. If you are overseeding your lawn, you need to rake up debris and dethatch your lawn if thatch is thicker than half an inch. This ensures that the grass seed will be as close to the soil as possible. You should also aim to keep the soil moist for a few weeks while the seeds are germinating.
Remove Leaves and Thatch
When leaves begin to fall in autumn, it is important to remove them before a thick layer forms that can smother the grass. Simply raking often removes thatch from your lawn, but in bad cases of soil compaction, you may need to get a lawn aerator to perform core aeration. If you have the funds, and you’re serious about lawn care, you may want to buy an aerator. Otherwise, you can simply rent one at a local hardware or garden supply store.
Maintain Equipment
Lawn care equipment requires constant maintenance throughout, but the fall season involves a more thorough maintenance process. Upkeep can save you tons of money and heartache in the long run. Fall is a great time to perform an oil change on your mower. You should also drain the gas from your mower or add a gas stabilizer. Consult your manual before using a stabilizer, because it may void your warranty.
Remove the mower’s spark plug with a spark-plug wrench. Lubricate the spark-plug cylinder with a teaspoon of oil through its hole. Install a new spark plug, but keep the spark-plug wire disconnected. Grease where necessary, especially the rear height-adjuster on a self-propelled mower.
You should check your blade and the bolts on the unit to ensure tightness. You should also inspect and possibly sharpen your mower blade. After you have completed these steps, store the mower in a clean, dry place away from any possible ignition sources.

Grass Clippings For Lawn Care
by admin on Aug.08, 2010, under Spark Plug Gap
Grass Clippings For Lawn Care
There are two schools of thought when it comes to this issue – neither of which is definitive.
Some people say leave the clippings on the lawn after you mow. This not only saves time and energy, but the clippings decompose quickly and add vital nutrients back into the soil.
In fact, recycling grass clippings has recently taken on a movement of its own. Proponents call this practice “grass-cycling” and advocate that leaving those clipping where they lay saves time, landfill space and nurtures the soil.
The Professional Lawn Care Association says that About 20 percent of all waste that goes into a landfill is landscape debris and about half of that is simply grass clippings. With yard waste bans in place in many areas of the country, “grass-cycling” offers you an alternative, and at the same time increases the health and beauty of your lawn.
Grass clippings are 85 percent water, decompose rapidly, and return nutrients to the soil with no thatch buildup. They actually return 20 percent of their nitrogen to the soil to feed the lawn’s root system. And grass-cycling can be practiced year-round with most mowers.
On the other side of the spectrum, others say that leaving clippings on your lawn is not only unsightly, but it can cause damage to your lawn as well. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn becomes a problem only if they are too thick. If you mow the lawn before it gets overly tall, the mass of the grass clippings will not be sufficient to warrant raking.
When cut grass lays in large clumps, it could be preventing the grass below it from getting the sunshine and water that it needs to grow. This could leave behind unsightly brown patches of dead grass.
A good way to obviate having to rake grass clippings is to mow with mulching lawn mowers. When you have a mulching mower, the clippings are gathered in a bag and can be used in compost piles for fertilization.
Using mulching mowers can not only cut down on your yard maintenance, but also makes your grass greener. Otherwise, you may end up either raking or bagging your grass clippings — which in turn mean disposing of those grass clippings or recycling them – all of which means extra work.
The bottom line is that as long as you are mowing on a regular basis and you don’t leave behind clumps of clippings, it won’t cause any harm leaving those clipping right where they are.
Fall leaf removal is not only necessary from an aesthetic perspective but also from an agronomic perspective. Although turf grass growth slows or ceases this time of the year, the plant will continue to photosynthesize as long as the turf is green.
Energy in the form of carbohydrates captured and stored from photosynthesis will go to enhance root growth and accumulate in the storage compartments (nodes, crowns, etc) to be used the following year. Leaves left on the turf grass shade the turf grass leaves reducing the turf plants ability to photosynthesize. Thus, the full potential to capture sunlight is greatly diminished when leaves are left on the turf. Additionally, if the leaves get wet, a microclimate under these leaves promote disease development.
The primary diseases that are favored by this environment are (also known as pink snow mold or fusarium patch) and powdery mildew. Thus, blowing or raking those leaves off the turf is an important fall agronomic practice. Owning and taking care of a lawn mower is similar to owning and taking care of a car. If it is neglected, performance will suffer.
It doesn’t matter that you’ve neglected your lawn mower well into the season. Start caring for it now! First, install fresh spark plugs. They’re inexpensive enough to replace rather than clean or gap.
If your mower has a paper air filter, give that a complete replacement, too. For foam air filters, buy new mower replacement foam and soak it oil before installing.
Dull blades harm lawns. Ripped out chunks of grass are highly vulnerable to a myriad of lawn diseases. Either remove the blade with a socket wrench, hone it with a file (following the existing cutting angle), or take it to a lawn-care shop for professional sharpening.
It’s just good sense before doing any of this work to run the mower until it runs completely out of gas. Turn the mower filter-side up (to prevent clogging) and drain the oil. Be sure to remove the plug or plug wire to keep the mower from firing up while you’re up to your elbows in machinery. Be sure the tires are fully inflated – especially with riding mowers. Under-inflated tires on a riding mower can cause what we, in our family, usually refer to as crop circles – unevenly mowed patches that resemble that otherworld phenomenon that some people think exist.
