They say that the hardest part in finishing something is getting started. And that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. These refer to the utmost importance of how the starting point defines the kind of travel you will be going to get. In the auto lingo, the ignition system is one important system to get the engine starting, or to get the ball rolling, so to speak.
Igniting the fuel at the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work is the main objective of the ignition system of a Mercedes Benz. It utilizes components responsible for making the spark. They include the spark plug, the coil and the distributor. Among these three, it is the distributor which proves very useful as it handles several jobs. Aside from the fact that it distributes the high voltage from the coil to the correct cylinder, it also does the job of breaking the current to the coil. Comprising the distributor is the rotating arm inside as well as a cam in the distributor shaft.
But the device which distributes electricity from the ignition coils to the sparkplug wires at the right timing is the Mercedes distributor cap. Having the cap and the rotor inspected during night time is more advisable as they can easily see the lights that they emit from the current. It is not advisable to touch them, though, electricity of up to 20,000 run through them.

Replacing a distributor cap in your vehicle can be a very simple task. You can save money by doing this task without the use of an auto repair shop.
First, determine what kind of distributor cap your vehicle needs. Any parts store in your area will be able to help you with this. Make sure you have your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine size with you. Before buying, make sure it looks like the one in your vehicle. To find the distributor cap, try following the spark plug wires back to the cap, which will be whatever the spark plugs hook in to.
Once found, you need to undo whatever is holding the cap in place. After you’ve determined how to remove the cap, set it to the side and take a look at the rotor button, which is what the distributor cap has been covering. If it looks in any way damaged, you’ll need to replace it before finishing the distributor cap replacement.

The metal part of the rotor arm passes close to (but does not touch) the output contacts which connect via high tension cables to the spark plug of each cylinder. As the rotor spins within the distributor, electrical current is able to jump the small gaps created between the rotor arm and the contacts due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil.
The firing end of the Mercedes distributor rotor is from where the high tension spark jumps to each of the cap terminals. It should not be worn because wearing out will result in resistance to the high tension spark. A worn firing end of the rotor requires immediate replacement. The rotors are mounted on the upper end of the distributor shaft. Thus, the Mercedes distributor rotor must have a snug fit on the end of the shaft. With other designs, two screws are used to attach the rotor to a plate on the top of the distributor shaft. Built-in locators ensure correct reassembly. These are found at the rotor and holes in the plate. One of which is round while the other is square.

The distributor is a vital part of the ignition system since its task is to direct the high voltage that comes from the ignition coil to the spark plugs. The distributor consists of components called the “distributor rotor” and the “distributor cap.” The distributor rotor, in particular, disseminates the high voltage to the towers of the distributor cap by rotating. The rotor is located at the upper end of the distributor shaft, and is linked to a plate with the use of two screws. To stay in place, the rotor is equipped with built-in locators that perfectly fit the holes.
The operation of the distributor rotor is facilitated by a centrifugal advance mechanism that sees to the rotation of the rotor around the camshaft. This device also has the ability to advance the spark timing, which allows the engine to run efficiently.
It is highly advised that car owners replace their distributors every 15, 000 miles or once in a few years. The firing end of the rotor, in particular, should always function properly and must be replaced once signs of wearing out are present.
