Winter Storage for Your Golf Equipment
Posted: May 24, 2010 |
]]>
Small engine vehicles, like golf carts, lawn mowers and trucksters, need the same care and maintenance as a car or truck. Owners tend to forget that putting a golf cart or mower away for the winter requires the same care as if you were planning to store a vehicle for an extended amount of time. Too often carts are stored away in some corner of the garage without much thought given to how well they will start up when the weather improves. Golf cart owners figure that hiding them away in a shed or garage, clear from the winter elements is sufficient. Not quite. Even if your golf cart or mower is new, they still require some maintainance. In fact, getting them to start up trouble-free from season to season requires you follow a few points of due-diligence.
First, gather up the equipment you will need to properly put your golf cart in storage for the winter. This equipment includes a wrench, a few bottles of distilled water, some cleaning rags, gloves for you, goggles for your eyes, a hydrometer (it measures the gravity of the electrolyte solution) and a voltmeter (to measure voltage). You may want to throw in some baking soda and vaseline as well.
The following are measures you can take to ensure your golf cart or course mower starts up again as spring comes around.
1. Read the manufacturer’s maintenance guide
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t try to tinker with the small engine if you’ve never handled one before. If you notice anything unusual, take your golf cart or mower to the nearest dealer for an inspection. Don’t wait until spring to have your small engine checked.
2. Remove the battery
Before storing your golf mower or cart for the winter, remove the battery and disconnect it from the battery cable. Store your battery in a safe place, away from heated elements, gas or furnace. Wipe it clean and brush off the battery terminal with a metal brush. Check for any cracks or borken elements. If the manufacturer recommends special cleaning solutions for your battery, give it a good cleaning before putting it away. If there are no spcial instructions, distilled water should do the trick. Avoid using corrosive cleaning chemicals. Most golf cart or mower problems are due to poorly maintained batteries.
3. Store in a safe, covered location
Store your golf cart or mower away from heaters, furnaces and gas containers. Also ensure that it is not place near any open windows where water damage may occur.
4. Put it away clean
Clean your cart or mower before storing it. Wash off any leaves, grass, residual soil, dried or wet mud, and moisture pockets from both the main exterior and underneath. Wipe off grass and dirt from around the blade using a long-handled brush - Do not use your bare hands! When you clean your mower, unplug the spark plug lead wire, wind it up gently and tape it together.
5. Remove remaining fuel
You should finish off any fuel that is remaining in your tank (if it uses fuel) or add a fuel preserver before storage. Read the instructions for the fuel preserver carefully before using. After adding it plug your mower or cart and let the engine run for a few minutes. This should give the fuel preserver enough time to go through the carburetor. One good thing about fuel preservers (also called stabilizers) is that they keep the fuel fresh in the engine for as long as half a year. You can now turn off the engine.
Follow these simple steps for storage and your golf cart or mower will start up in a snap.

Useful tips for car engine tune ups

Regular car tune ups are important to preserve the car’s good running performance. Failure to do this might cost you hundreds of dollars for engine repairs. Regular car tune up also allows you to know the needed replacements on the vehicle’s engine. Try to practice regular car engine tune ups using the useful tips enumerated below.
Start with the distributor cap
Start the tune up service of your car by removing its distributor cap. Familiarize yourself with is position before removing it. This allows you to replace it correctly after the work is done. Check the cap for possible wears.
Once the distributor cap is removed, you are now able to take the rotor out and replace it. The rotor needs to be replaced every 100,000 miles for newer cars. When you replace a rotor with a new one, the distributor cap also needs to be replaced. This is because the rotor and the distribution cap react to produce a spark that the vehicle needs.
You also need to replace the spark plugs and its wires when doing the car’s tune up. This gives the vehicle’s engine a better starting capability. Make sure to check the car’s air filter and replace it with a new one when apparent wears are visible and get a auto repair financing .
Use high quality oils and lubricants
Use high quality oils and lubricants for better engine performance. Instead of using cheaper oils and lubricants, spend an additional amount to buy those that are made by reputable oil companies. Doing these boosts your car engine’s performance.
It is also advisable to change the car’s oil and top it up when doing the tune up. Maintain the engine’s good performance by doing regular change oils every 3000 miles. Change the car’s Oil filter change every second oil change. You can also use coolant additives to bring down the temperature of the car’s engine.

Vista Auto Parts Improves Their Car Hid Lights And The Car Ignition Coil Variety

Car HID lights are a pretty new technology to most drivers, even in the USA car market scene. Car HID lights use a really different and effective light bulb as compared to the conventional light bulb. Vista Auto Parts will take you through some of the basics you may need to know about this kind of car lights. Car HID lights use arc lamp technology for their operation. This technology employs high voltage – around 15000 volts – to create an arc between the two electrodes that are in the light bulb that also contains Xenon gas. The conventional light bulb uses a small tungsten filament wire instead of the two electrodes.
Car lighting is generally regarded as its eye and alert the driver of the car about the people moving on the road, the objects on the road and enhance the driver’s vision. One of the prerequisites of a safe drive, car lights are imperative to ward off any accidents which can result due to blurred visions of the driver.
A popular misconception that surrounds Car HID lights is that the higher the color temperature, the brighter the light bulb. This not true and on the contrary color is the only thing affected by temperature. For normal looking lights the 6,000K car HID lights are the best option. The 5000K HID light provides white light which has hints of yellow. The 8,000K provides white light with shades of blue. For white light with shades of green you require the 10,000K car HID lights and for bluish purplish light you need the 12,000K headlight.
Vista Auto Parts recommends car HID lights for their resilience and durability-almost ten times longer than conventional lights. These lights also provide a deeper field of view.; Once you’ve used these car HID lights, you will not want to return to conventional lights.
Visibility is absolutely essential when it comes to a safe drive on the road. Apart from your own consciousness, it is essential that weather conditions stay normal so that you can see the road ahead clearly and brightly. But you cannot expect a clear cut visibility in foggy weather conditions and to drive safe in such weather conditions, it is essential that you have your vehicle equipped with special light systems, especially designed to be mounted on your vehicle to beat bad foggy weather conditions and to warn other drivers and pedestrians that your vehicle is approaching.
At Vista Auto Parts we have revamped our collection of car ignition coils. No need to wait any longer! We now have a full stock ignition coils for all makes and models.
Fog lights come in a variety of colors, intensities and styles to suit various vehicles and personal taste. Yellow is the color that is most desirable when it comes to the right color for a fog light, there are scientific reasons to use a yellow in most of the fog lights but nowadays there are other choices available that fits the same criteria. There are halogen fog lights available in the market that has a propensity to give a tighter beam in comparison to glowing fog lamps to give an added benefit. Also available in the markets are, xenon lights that are almost three times brighter than halogen fog lights.
For those not in the know about car ignition coils (otherwise known as the induction coil), this is a short summary on the basics. , including care and maintenance. The car ignition coil is the component that converts low voltage from the car’s battery into high voltage which is needed by the spark plugs to create the spark that fires the engine. As the car ignition coil wears down, it tends to misfire contributing to waste in fuel. You can prevent this by performing timely service and replacing the car ignition coil when needed.
Xenon Fog Light systems are more durable and long-lasting than any other fog light systems and are also appealing in looks and features. Crucial to navigating poor weather, a fog light system is a real help for driving on the road but if you really want to beat the extreme fog weather, it is essential that you opt for the extreme lights and xenon lights are one such extreme lights that really give you the power to beat the extreme weather conditions – the foggy weather conditions.

Maintaining Your High Performance Electrical System
Posted: Aug 20, 2008 |Comments: 0

]]>
On any automobile, the condition of the electrical system goes a long way towards keeping your performance at the most advantageous level. This system is called upon to do a lot when it comes to keeping your ride running. In an older motor vehicle, the electrical system has to keep energy flowing to the ignition and spark plugs, as well as run all of the cars accessories. In a modern car, extra strain is added by the fact that the cars computer needs a stable stream of power, not to mention the demands of a massive amount of sensors.
When racing, the cars engine is under maximum load for a fairly considerable length of time. This means that if the electrical system is not in the very best shape, you could be looking at power loss, hesitation, and strange behavior at the worst possible time. No one wants to pull out to pass someone only to have a cylinder misfire, or experience the agony of the ignition shutting off halfway down a quarter-mile run. How can you avoid these types of problems dudes?
The first thing to do is make sure your alternator is up to the job of generating the power you require while racing. The alternator runs off a belt from the engine and it is intended to put out enough power to not only charge the battery but also keep the motor running. If you have added on a more powerful ignition, or a new stand-alone engine management system, then your stock alternator might not be able to keep up with the electrical demands your car is making. Upgrading to a larger alternator will give your car more amps to divide amongst the various electrical components that are needed while running at full throttle.
The next item you should check? Your connection points. Increased electrical demands means more heat being created at each junction where wires connect to each other, to the battery, or to the chassis. Over time this heat can damage connections or burn them out, leaving them blackened or scored. This heat degrades the ability of a connection to properly transmit the power your engine needs. Not only that, but solenoids can also be burned out completely by this extreme electrical heat. If you notice that certain connections are consistently being affected, then you can try to upgrade them to a gauge of wire with a greater capacity. You might also want to consider evaluating your wiring as a whole to see why certain points are falling victim to more heat than others.
A further way to reduce the strain on your electrical system while racing is to remove accessories that you don’t really need. Stereo system, air conditioner, power windows and door locks? These extras are not going to help you make horsepower out on the track, and their use while racing is just going to put stress on your alternator. Ripping them out or shutting them down while you are racing will help keep the electrical system cool and probably pick you up a few seconds over the course of the race.

(Redirected from Cheddaring)
Cheddar is the quintessentially the most English cheese, and may be the most common type in the world. Originally made in a Somersetshire village, England, its manufacture has spread around the world.
As a result the name has become generic. The process of cheddaring makes cheddar unique when compared to other cheeses.
Food ingredients used during manufacture
Milk
Generally, the milk is raw milk (whole or 3.3%). The milk must be “ripened” before adding in the rennet (see below). The term ripening here means allowing the lactic acid bacteria to lower the pH of the solution, which aids greatly in the coagulation of the milk.
Lactic acid bacteria
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are responsible for turning lactose into lactic acid, thereby reducing the pH of the solution. When the pH is lower, the protein is more easily precipitated. This is vital for the production of cheese curds that are later formed into cheddar.
Rennet/chymosin/rennin
Rennet is an enzyme that is collected from the stomach of a milk-fed calf. In more recent years, this enzyme is commonly produced by using modified bacteria and has adopted the name Chymosin and Rennin. This enzyme is responsible for the coagulation of the milk proteins to produce curds. Coagulation can also be achieved using acids, but the resulting cheddar will not be as high quality.
Equipment
400 pounds of milk in a pilot scale cheese vat
This is not a comprehensive list of equipment, but includes some of the less mundane items commonly used in cheddar cheese making operations
Stainless steel wire knivesThese knives are used to uniformly cut the curds at various points during the process. Basically a stainless steel frame with stainless steel wires, that will cut the curd cleanly.
VatVats will vary depending on a variety of factors. Generally oval or rectangle shaped with hollow walls that are used for holding warm water to keep the curds at desired temperatures. This part of the vat is referred to as the jacket.
Milling machineA milling machine is used to cut the matted curds that are formed during the cheddaring process. This allows the curds to be easily salted.
Add rennet
Generally 34 ounces of rennet are added per 1000 pounds of mix. The rennet will serve to coagulate the milk protein and form curds. The vat must be mixed thoroughly after the addition of the rennet to ensure equal mixing, and it also helps to dilute the rennet to make it easier to spread around.
Pure water is used when diluting the rennet as any pH that is not near 7 will rapidly decrease the effectiveness of the rennet, as will chlorine. Thus, water with impurities will result in a vastly decreased yield of cheese.
Setting the curd
Testing of curd setting
Once the rennet is added, the mixture must be allowed to set and form curds. The mixture is kept at around 29-31 degrees Celsius (8488 degrees Fahrenheit). Generally temperature is controlled by flowing warm water through the jacket of the vat. Setting time varies, and allowing a proper amount of time is vital. It commonly takes anywhere from 3040 minutes to set the curd.
The most common way to determine when the curd is set is by inserting a flat blade at a 45 degree angle into the curd and raising it slowly. If the curd breaks cleanly leaving a glassy fracture, it is ready for cutting. In a large cheddar manufacturing facility, this may also be tested using a viscometer.
Cutting the curd
Cutting of the curds after setting
The curd is cut into 0.63 cm to 1.59 cm (1/4 to 5/8 inch) cubes using stainless steel wire knives. A smaller cube size means the cheese will be lower moisture whereas a larger cube size will result in a high moisture cheese.
It is important that cutting time is minimized and that the cuts be clean. The best way to determine how efficient the cutting job was is to determine the fat content of the whey. The optimal level of fat content of whey is .3% fat or less.
The curds are handled gently after cutting to prevent fat and protein loss to the whey. The curd is prevented from sticking to the sides of the vat, but minimal agitation is desired. The curds are allowed to set again for 1015 minutes. Fat and protein loss may affect the ability for the cheese to be considered cheddar cheese depending on the region where it is…(and so on) To get More information , you can visit some products about Stainless Steel Tableware, stainless steel tray, . Based on the original book and concept by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts and follows the fallout when the supremely untalented star of Robbin’ Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. Can a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself?

Common Spill Control Problems Facing Small And Medium Sized Businesses
Although large businesses and industries are fully aware of the legal obligation to ensure that they have plenty of appropriate spill kits and spill control solutions in place, it is often the case that smaller businesses and even medium sized businesses struggle to comply with the health and safety regulations. The reason for this is threefold, including cost, space, and a misunderstanding in many cases of how spill kits function in relation to the various risks which may be present on site.

Automotive Training For Do-It-Yourselfers

Automotive training used to be a more common part of our society. Shop class was a commonly offered elective in high schools nationwide, ensuring that most boys knew their way around a car’s engine bay. Additionally, cars relied more on mechanical principles, rather than computerized systems. As a result, when a car broke down, the owner was much more likely to know how to fix it themselves, or at least have a friend or a family member who could fix it for them.
The situation has changed dramatically over the years. Today’s cars are much more complex, and their owners are much less likely to have had any automotive training. As a result, dealerships and garages are repairing a higher percentage of cars than ever before, and mechanics’ rates have risen in accordance with the increased necessity of their services.
Those who dislike the situation have another option. With a little automotive training, most people can perform more of the routine maintenance on their cars, reducing the expenses associated with car maintenance and allowing them the satisfaction of a job well done.
An oil change is an example of routine maintenance that frequently costs car owners far more than they need to spend. An oil change is a fairly simple procedure in most cars, requiring only enough automotive training for the individual to know the location of the oil filter and drain plug. A basic car care class should teach car owners how to locate major components under the hood and perform simple maintenance tasks, as well as imparting valuable tips for beginning do-it-yourselfers. For example, a good introductory class should warn students to beware of screwing a bolt or screw in crooked, known as crossing the threads.
A basic tune up is another routine maintenance task that do-it-yourselfers should be able to handle with a little automotive training. A basic tune up usually consists of changing the air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and positive crankcase valve (PCV). Depending on the car and the mileage recommendations on the components, a basic tune up can also include replacing the fuel filter and/or the oxygen sensor. Rubber parts, such as drive belts and radiator hoses, may also be checked and replaced during a tune up. On most cars, these parts are easily accessed and require only a basic understanding of automotive functions.
A do-it-yourselfer who has had basic automotive training can also replace his or her own brakes. Changing the brake pads on a car is typically a dirty but simple job, requiring only a basic understanding of the braking components on a car. Additionally, there are numerous routine maintenance and repair jobs that an intermediate level amateur mechanic can usually handle on his or her own, such as replacing a battery, alternator, starter, timing belt, and many other components.
Of course, a significant advantage of having automotive training is that dealerships and garages cannot take advantage of you by recommending maintenance that may not actually need to be done. A basic understanding of auto mechanics will enable you to intelligently discuss any problems with your mechanic, understand what he or she is talking about, and recognize when his or her recommendations are exaggerated or downright unnecessary.
Obviously, knowing the basics of how a car operates can be extremely beneficial, saving you money in more ways than one. Beginning automotive training classes are usually offered at your local auto tech school or community college. Whether you intend to venture a few repairs on your own, or you simply want to be able to hold your own with your mechanic, taking a car care class ensures that you will not be a victim of your own ignorance.

Most emission testing centers today check four pollutants: carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxide (NOX) and the “evaporative emissions”.
Do you have an old car like a Plymouth Voyager? You are probably concerned with what is emits since your Plymouth exhaust is already quite old and it might emit undesirable colored gasses.
You need to know these emitted dangerous gases to eventually know the right way of maintaining your old exhaust system like the Plymouth exhaust system and avoiding these gases at the same time.
Carbon monoxide is the deadliest among pollutants. You cannot see it nor smell it. A concentration of only half a percent (0.5%) CO in the air can make a person unconscious and kill within 10 to 15 minutes. Even very small amount of concentrations as four hundredths of a percent (0.04%) can cause headaches and be life threatening after several hours of exposure.
Never run an engine inside an enclosed garage. Since this is a gas, it diffuses very fast that you cannot even count the seconds of its diffusion. If engine is run inside an enclosed area, chances are 75 percent of carbon dioxide particles are stocked in that area; so you can easily inhale it. Remember that this gas is invisible and odorless. You cannot really tell when it is around.
It is formed when the fuel mixture is rich and there is insufficient oxygen to completely burn all the fuel. Carbon monoxide and fuel mixture has a direct proportionality, which means the richer the fuel mixture, the greater the quantity of CO produced. So high CO emissions indicate incomplete combustion typically caused by several maladjustments.
When the engine is first started, carbon monoxide production is highest because the fuel mixture is richer than normal during this time and the catalytic converter has not yet reached operating temperature. It is therefore the time when it is most dangerous.
Despite these thrilling facts, emission of carbon monoxide can be minimized. By maintaining a balanced to slightly lean fuel mixture, CO is reduced. This just requires careful adjustments on the carburetor idle mixture screws.
Hydrocarbon emissions are unburned gasoline and oil vapors. Though not directly harmful, they are a major contributor to smog and ozone pollution (which are toxic). Hydrocarbons in the atmosphere react with sunlight and break down to form other chemical compounds that irritate the eyes, nasal passages, throat and lungs.
HC emissions, which are usually measured in parts per million (PPM), can go up as a result of a fouled plug or bad plug wire, incorrect carburetor idle adjustment or vacuum leaks that creates a lean mixture that misfires, loss of compression such as a burned or leaky exhaust valve, or engine wear that causes the engine to burn oil Engine wear include the wearing of valve guides, rings and/or cylinders.
Hydrocarbon emissions are controlled in three different ways. One is by maintaining the fuel mixture so it is neither too lean nor too rich to ignite. The second one is by keeping the combustion chamber tightly sealed, and lastly by maintaining the ignition system or changing the plugs periodically. HC that is produced in the engine is burned again in the catalytic converter and changed into water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Nitrogen comprises the most percentage of the air we breathe; about 78 percent. Though normally inert and not directly involved in the combustion process, combustion temperatures above 2500 degrees F cause nitrogen and oxygen to combine and form various compounds called “nitrogen oxide”. This mostly occurs when the engine is under load and the throttle is open wide.
Nitrogen oxide can cause irritations in the eye, nose and lungs, headaches and irritability. Higher concentrations can cause bronchitis and they oftentimes aggravate other lung disorders leading to death. Once released in the atmosphere, it reacts with oxygen to form ozone (which is also toxic to breathe) and smog.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is used to reduce the formation of NOX. By circulating again a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold to dilute the air/fuel mixture, EGR has a “cooling” effect on combustion. This, in turn, puts temperatures below the NOX formation threshold.
High NOX emissions are often times due to a defective EGR valve or some component that controls the operation of the EGR valve. A related sign that usually occurs when EGR is lost is spark knock or detonation while accelerating.
Last of the four pollutants, but still dangerous, are the “evaporative emissions” (EM). EM control system that captures and holds vapors from your fuel tank. The fuel vapors that evaporate from your fuel tank can be another source of smog and ozone pollution. To avoid vapor loss, car manufacturers seal fuel systems for the past twenty years.
The amount of pollution adds up, especially during hot weather, so it is important to make sure the system is functioning properly.

Diesel Fuel Prices To Skyrocket – Water Fuel (HHO) As The Next Best Option
The concept of water being used as fuel is simple. You will be using Hydrogen gas or H2 gas instead of diesel fuel or gasoline. Right now, technology still doesn’t permit us to utilize 100% Hydrogen gas on a car. It is usually mixed with a little bit of diesel, but still it reduces the money you’ll have to pay for diesel fuel. When you use the hybrid of diesel and hydrogen gas in your car, your car runs efficiently and it will get you to where you need to go.

How to Maintain Your Lawn Mower

It’s the same every year! The end of winter is signaled by longer days, budding trees and the return of the dawn chorus. It is also the time of year that our thoughts start turning to the need to begin tending to our lawn again. Grass that has laid dormant over winter is now beginning to grow and those dreaded weeds are reappearing with gusto! So, how do we best prepare our lawn mower for the upcoming lawn mowing season?
Prepare Your Lawn
It might seem strange that in order to prepare your lawn mower you should first concentrate on your lawn. This is because over winter, particularly if it has been a cold one, rocks and stones could have migrated through your soil to the surface of your lawn.
Walk around your garden and remove any objects that are likely to interfere with your mower. It only takes a small rock to chip the cutting blade of your lawn mower.
Prepare Your Lawn Mower
The first thing to do is pull your lawn mower out of its winter home and clean off any dirt and cob webs. Whilst cleaning your mower check all the moving parts are still working and operational (apply grease and water dispersant as required and in accordance with your owners manual).
Check The Cutting Blade
Make sure you clean the underside of the lawn mower to ensure there is nothing obstructing the turning blade. For gas powered mowers consult the owners manual to ensure you turn your mower over the correct way; failure to do this could result in a flooded engine or worse.
Inspection Checks For Electric Mowers
There are a couple of simple checks that you can perform before starting up your electric mower for the first time this season.
Unravel the electric cable by feeding the cable through your closed hand. You are looking and feeling for damaged sections of the lead. If the lead appears kinked or the inner wires are exposed then you must replace the entire lead. Never operate an electrical device when the power cord is damaged.
Check the underside of the mower to ensure there are no foreign objects present that could damage the blade – you would be surprised at what can collect underneath a lawn mower over the winter period!
Inspection Tasks For Gas Powered Mowers
If you are unsure whether you are able to complete the following tasks then we recommend paying for a qualified mechanic to perform the annual servicing on your lawn mower.
However, for the mechanically minded the following tasks are relatively straight forward and when completed will help a rough running mower to perform much better;
1. Remove any old fuel that has been left in the tank (for gas powered mowers only) and replace with new. Old fuel does not burn efficiently and may clog up the filter in your mower.
2. Check the oil by removing the dipstick, cleaning it and then reinserting. Remove once again and check to make sure the oil is not a black smudgy mess. If it is then it is time to replace the oil. Consult your owners manual for guidance on how this is to be accomplished and the grade of oil that should be used.
3. Check the spark plug for oil or burnt carbon deposits. If either exist then it is best to replace the plug as well. Again, consult your owners manual for the correct type of plug that you will need to buy.
4. Remove the air filter and check to make sure that it is not clogged with oil and dirt. Clean it with an appropriate cleaner, dry and replace. Never operate a lawn mower without a filter as you will damage the engine.
Blade Sharpening
The next thing to consider is the blade. Physically look at the blade and make sure the cutting edge is smooth and free of damage. Stones and rocks will chip the blade making it less effective at cutting your grass. If the blade is dull looking then you may need to sharpen it; it is best to remove the blade and take to your local mower mechanic who will sharpen it for you.
If the blade is badly damaged then remove it and replace with a new one.
Happy Mowing!
By undertaking these simple tasks just prior to spring you will help to ensure that your lawn mower is running the most efficiently it can. A lawn mower that is operating efficiently is a lawn mower that will cut your grass in the quickest manner without breaking down and causing you a headache.
Mowing your lawn need not be a chore!

Why People Prefer Diesel Generators Over Gasoline?

]]>
In today’s economy, where fuel prices are increasing you should choose a cost effective fuel to meet your needs. Diesel engines are extremely efficient and cost effective. Though the cost of diesel is higher than gasoline but diesel has a higher energy density. Energy density means more energy can be extracted from diesel when compared to same volume of gasoline. Most of the automobiles like trucks, cars etc prefer diesel because they provide higher mileage. Diesel is heavier and oilier compared with gasoline, and has a boiling point higher than that of water.
Diesel engines work on compression ignition while gasoline engines operate on spark ignition. In diesel generators air is drawn into the engine which results in higher compression that heats it up. The temperature of engine goes up, which is much higher than the temperature attained in a gasoline engine. At peak temperature and pressure, diesel that is let into the engine ignites on account of the extreme temperature.
Air and fuel are infused into the diesel generator at various stages while in a gas generator a mixture of air and gas are introduced. In diesel engine, fuel is injected through an injector while a carburetor is used for gasoline engine. In a gasoline generator, fuel and air are sent into the engine together, and then compressed. Diesel generator compresses only air and the ratio is much higher. Diesel generators compresses at the ratio of 14:1 upto 25:1 whereas gasoline has a compression ratio between 8:1 and 12:1. Diesel generators can either be two cycles or four cycles and are chosen based on mode of operation. Mostly air cooled and liquid cooled engines are the variants to be chosen appropriately. Liquid cooled generators are much better because it is quiet in operation and has controlled temperature.
Advantages of Diesel generators:
Diesel generators are much better and efficient and when compared to gasoline engine. Some of the reasons are as follows:
Earlier models of diesel generators had higher noise and higher maintenance costs. But modern diesel engines require less maintenance and are quiet when compared to gas engines. They are more rugged and reliable Fuel cost per Kilowatt of diesel engines is thirty to fifty percent lower than that of gas engines. There is no sparkling as the fuel auto-ignites. The absence of spark plugs or spark wires lowers maintenance costs. Diesel engine that has 1800 rpm water cooled engine operates for 12,000 to 30,000 hours before any major maintenance is necessary. While gas unit that has 1800 rpm water cooled engine operators for 6,000-10,000 hours before it needs servicing. Gas burns hotter than diesel, and hence they have a shorter life when compared to diesel units.
